Especially since there’s been no progress on the ICE issue. There’s a very large chance he will wander off topic, and he’ll provide a lot of ammunition for the Democrats, at a guess, and the GOP will look horrible. They’re not exactly cohesive these days. Rumor says that there has been infighting among Republicans. (I can’t find the source I read, hence rumors.) With thanks to Raw Story:

Trump is full steam ahead with his State of the Union address scheduled for Feb. 24, despite alarm bells ringing among GOP insiders over the timing, as the speech lands smack in the middle of an expected partial government shutdown. Behind closed doors, nervous Republicans quietly sweat the optics, Politico reported Friday. “It doesn’t exactly scream ‘a functioning GOP trifecta,'” griped one House Republican granted anonymity.

Ha. Doesn’t represent Trump and the GOP in a good light is more like it. They are right to worry about this. *Everyone* knows Trump won’t stay on topic for the whole speech. There’s a good likelihood he’ll lose his ability to speak if it’s the same as what Ursula showed us yesterday. That will be even better. They’d best have his doctor there off-camera, because who knows what he’ll do?

Republicans are concerned that Trump touting a strong union while a critical chunk of the federal government sits dark could be a bad look. When asked if postponement was on the table, a senior White House official replied, “Not as of yet.” In 2019, Trump battled former Speaker Nancy Pelosi for more than a week over delaying an address during a shutdown before finally backing down.

This time, Speaker Mike Johnson isn’t expected to push for a delay unless Trump requests it. The DHS funding lapse will drag on through the speech, with the White House and Senate Democrats at loggerheads over immigration enforcement. Lawmakers jetted out of Washington on Thursday with no expectation of being called back early.

This is fascinating. If I’m reading this correctly, Congress left yesterday and will be back at their normally scheduled show at some future point. DHS will be unfunded. Now, there are a whole bunch of us who will be dancing in the streets (if ICE isn’t around), over that tidbit. We can expect they won’t “shut down,” but oooo, if people refuse to work without being paid, there will be hell to pay, especially with promises to newbies being broken. On the other hand, they may enjoy their brutality far too much and work anyhow.

White House officials and GOP brass want Trump to use the prime-time address to bury recent negative headlines such as the fatal immigration agent shootings in Minnesota and the Jeffrey Epstein files release, and pivot to economic messaging for the midterms instead.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt fired back on Fox News: “President Trump has been, and always will be, on the side of the American people. He wants our government to remain open, and unfortunately, it appears that Democrats are barreling our government towards another shutdown for political and partisan reasons.”

Is it only Democrats? I’m not so certain of that. Republicans have really been feeling the heat these days with all the press ICE/CBP has been getting for their abuse and killings, and {insert your contribution here}. Ahahaha. Trump’s cabinet has been in the news, and not for good reasons, a bunch, too. We have to know that he will be boasting about all of that, even with a written speech in front of him. Trump is going to screw up, and the hammer will fall on his cabinet and on Republicans. See me cry crocodile tears. [Okay, folks, has my writing gotten really bad or something?]

Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise that among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

  1. i think it will be a mess. trump will spout obvious lies about everything, insult and demeam everyone and as you said probably go all batshit at some, hppefully early, point. he loves to hear himself talk and he likes to make these things long and the longer it lasts the worse he’s likely to get.

    • Mess is an understatement. Disaster? Someone needs to stand by with a shepherd’s crook to yank him off stage. Republicans are right to worry. Hell, *we* should worry, because there’s no way to predict him coming off with some comment to whomever in his ‘cabinet’ to get something new started. I wonder where they’re going to send ICE/CBP next. I also found out ICE is in Georgia officially because they rampaged through a small town. What the eff yew cee kay.

  2. HI, Susan. You wrote, “Doesn’t represent Trump and the GOP in a good light is more like it.” The verb you were looking for was “present,” not “represent.” Have a good day.
