We have one functioning political party in America right now and for the past nine years. The GOP spun off into some strange cul-de-sac back in 2015 and they just can’t find their way out of it. They keep going in circles, convinced that if they go faster they’ll convince the country that they’re getting somewhere. Nope, not unless being the equivalent of a hamster on a wheel can be said to be progress. The latest jape from the GOP is claiming that Joe Biden doesn’t have the legal right to step aside and endorse a successor. Puh-leeze. Surely the Party Of Lincoln has heard of the 13th Amendment?
WITHIN MINUTES OF PRESIDENT BIDEN’S WITHDRAWAL from the 2024 race, Senator Tom Cotton leaped onto X to declare that “Joe Biden succumbed to a coup by Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, and Hollywood donors, ignoring millions of Democratic primary votes. Donald Trump took a bullet for democracy.”
Radio host Erick Erickson was even more creative, tweeting that “Y’all can argue over the word coup, but Biden stepping aside is the American equivalent of all those people accidentally falling out of windows in Russia.”
David Sacks, the Putin lickspittle, Elon Musk appendage, and featured speaker at the Republican National Convention, offered that “One candidate survived assassination. The other staged a coup. Your choice, America.”
And Speaker Mike Johnson told a TV audience on Sunday that “it would be wrong and I think unlawful in accordance to some of these state rules for a handful of people to go in the backroom and switch it out because they’re—they don’t like the candidate any longer.”
This is rich. There is indeed a candidate in this race who attempted to stage a coup, and we know who that is. Trump submitted his false electoral votes, pressured his vice president, and sent his goons to Capitol Hill because he would not accept the verdict of the voters. And the party that openly admires Vladimir Putin (see Carlson, Tucker) has no business making snarky comments about people falling out of windows. So please sit down and shut up with your coup talk.
The writer telling the GOP to shut up is Mona Charen, who used to write speeches for Nancy Reagan. I have the opposite take on it, which is keep talking. Please keep talking, all day every day and on into the night. Especially Moses Mikey, who thinks that there’s something illegal happening. I can’t wait for him to run that legal theory up the flagpole and see if it flies.
Was it illegal for Lyndon Johnson to decide he didn’t want to run for another term? No, it was not, but the Republicans of that day and age were sane, unlike the ones in this era. And by the same token if, for some reason Jimmy Carter or George H.W. Bush had decided that they didn’t want to seek reelection, it is doubtful that anybody would have argued with them about it. It’s only this iteration of the GOP, the MAGAfornicated version of what used to be the Republican party, that sees things through this jaded and preposterous glass, darkly.
What we witnessed over the past several weeks was a political party, the Democratic party, acting like a healthy institution and not like a mob-inflected cult. Democrats ushered Joe Biden into the nomination in 2020, and they ushered him out in 2024 for good and sufficient reasons. Yes, it was painful for Biden, but with the stakes being so high, Democrats found that sentimentality was something neither they nor the country could afford.
Now that the infighting is over, it’s a relief to be a Democrat again. The roiling and churning of hot emotion the past month — since the evening of June 27 to pinpoint it — was not a time that I want to relieve. If there’s one thing I have zero stomach for, it is internecine party sniping and we had it going all directions the past month.
Poor Joe. He had a very difficult decision to make, the most difficult one of his long career, I think it’s safe to say. But he made it with dignity and showed a lot of class. He totally blew Donald Trump’s mind because Trump is not capable of comprehending a situation wherein somebody voluntarily relinquishes power. Trump is still shaking his head and trying to figure that one out, the concept is so foreign to him.
Keep pondering it, Donald. And you might want to ponder if there’s still time to dump your VP choice, because nobody likes him. He’s a lousy speaker, zero charisma (yes, we know that’s why you chose him, because he’s not a threat to you) but he’s so low on the charisma scale that he might end up costing you votes.
And Vance is not a successor to MAGA. Unlike you, Donald, he’s not the kind of a whacko that inspires a cult. He doesn’t have that Jim Jones, je ne sais quoi, that you and Charlie Manson have. He’s just a deeply unpleasant creep. But, nice try.

🎶 Every time I hear these whiny crybabies (talking to you Mike Johnson) saying they’ll sue the Dems, I hear Lesley Gore singing back to the GQP, “it’s our party and we’ll do want we want to, you can cry if you want to, but we’ll do what we want to, you’d do it too if this happened to you!” (Apologies to Ms. Gore) 😘
Mirror accusations…a tactic used by Hitler and the murderous nazis. It’s where you accuse the other party/person of doing something they’ve never done before and they will never do, but something you have either already done or you are planning to do. That’s who we are dealing with. Damn I hate I missed the war where the patriotic thing was to pick up a weapon, land on the German soil, and go shoot these sons of bitches. Now we have to listen to them whine and bitch and draw huge salaries from the taxpayers. What a phucking planet we live on.
tRump’s new nickname: Mr. McCoup. (Nobody under 60 would get the reference!)
Maybe we should re-christen his right-hand man Gerald McBoing-Boing (Say hello, Gerald – “Boing Boing”), and use AI to re-create Jim Backus voicing the nearsighted Mr. Magoo…..
Cotton proves he has only cotton between his ears every time he opens that ignorant pie-hole of his which, unfortunately, is way too often. He constantly “removes all doubt” when he opens it.
So, what these morons are saying is a President can resign (25th amendment) but cannot drop out of an election? Or are they even allowing that f.f.s.?
Ah, yes, ability to thing logically disqualifies one from MAGA…..
