This is an interesting turn of events. After all of his huffing and puffing about how unfairly Donald Trump was being treated, Mike Pence has decided that he will not appeal the ruling of the court that he must testify regarding matters surrounding the January 6 insurrection. This is a far cry from a few weeks ago when Pence was going to take the matter all the way to the Supreme Court.
He must have found the arraignment in New York Tuesday to be a wake up call. Donald Trump sat in the same seat as other accused criminals, was read his Miranda rights, all of it. Maybe Pence had a Come To Jesus moment and realized that defending Trump was pure folly. In any event, here’s what’s going to happen now. Washington Post:
Pence’s decision to drop the appeal means he will probably testify under oath about Trump’s attempts to pressure him, and he could be a key witness. Trump and his team could still appeal the ruling, but they have lost similar cases previously.
Pence is likely to testify this month, though the date is not settled, an adviser said.
The decision comes as Trump is actively pursuing the 2024 Republican presidential nomination and ahead of an expected bid by Pence to challenge him. Pence’s testimony could add to Trump’s mounting legal exposure as the nominating process unfolds.
Pence could effectively hang Trump and he might as well. Whether he will or not is up for grabs because the man is known to be a moral coward, despite all of his protestations of being a devout Christian. Even run of the mill Christians tell the truth. One would expect an even higher standard from a Bible thumper like Pence.
If Pence is even slightly grounded in reality, he knows at this point that he has virtually no shot at the GOP nomination. If he wants to go down in history as a decent man, this is his last chance to come clean. It would be a healing thing for the country if Pence would just spill the beans and give us some closure. And who knows? Maybe, by some wild chance, he would win over moderate Republicans, in doing so, and have a chance at the nomination. He has zero chance with the MAGA base, ever, so he might as well cut his losses and do what’s right.
The only chance any GOPer has to get the nomination is to take Trump on. So far Asa Hutchinson is the only one to do it. Ron DeSantis has to at some point. If Mike Pence has any prayer of the nomination, now is the time to make his move and bury Trump. Let’s see if he has the guts to do it. I’m not holding my breath, but that said, hope springs eternal.
Grand Jury testimony is secret. No one will know what he says until a trial and only then if they need his testimony. Who knows when Jack Smith is going to wrap up this J6 case and bring charges. It would not surprise me if this doesn’t go to trial until 2025. I think Pence has figured out his testimony won’t be public before the election, so fighting this subpoena is futile.
