Less than 24 hours after being called as the new rulers of the US House, the mental midgets of the GOP House went into an immediate victory lap, taking turns at the podium to assure all and sundry that their next 2 years of House stewardship will be spent in investigations of Hunter Biden’s laptop, the DOJ response to January 6th, and trying to impeach Biden, Blinken, Garland and Mayorkas.
There’s just one small problem with this strategy. Almost nobody in America voted for this bullshit! But lacking any actual agenda, ideas, or programs to run with, this lame bullshit is all the GOP has for the next 2 years. Victimization and petty revenge.
Which presents a problem for the GOP. If McCarthy gets the gavel, the MAGAts will rule in the House. Which means that their caucus members will hold Chairmanships in all of the major House committees. But since their endless sham hearings will be about totally useless subjects, the national media is not going to give them the kind of gavel-to-gavel coverage of their nonsense. But the GOP is still going to get their sound bytes out of it.
Which gives the Democrats 2 political advantages going forward. First, the Democratic House needs to keep going to the floor to propose popular legislation, and let the GOP shoot it down. At this point, with an infantile GOP majority, messaging to independent soft voters is crucial. As such, the Democratic Senate needs to keep passing popular progressive legislation and sending it to the House for McCarthy to quash.
The second part is just as important, but more nuanced. The GOP is going to hold their sham hearings, and try to get their sound bytes out there for dissemination to the narcotized sheeple. But the media likes to at least pretend to be fair and balanced, and that gives the Democrats their edge.
The Democrats need to be incredibly surgical in their appointments to seats on committees. They need to look at the GOP dominated committees that are most likely to generate sound bytes and buzz, and offset it with highly qualified Democratic sharks.
Even if it may be out of their comfort zone, the Democrats needs to place members like AOC, David Cicilline, Jamie Raskin, Carolyn Clark, and Katie Porter on those committees. Simply because they’ll Do the homework, and show up prepared. And when the networks show footage of the GOP committees spouting lame GOP bullshit through their tame witnesses, they’ll feel honor bound to provide equal coverage to the Democratic sharks carving them into sushi in their questioning.
Look, the GOP has no actual agenda or solutions to push forward for the next 2 years. It’s all going to be a never-ending buffet of lame, nonsensical investigations. So it’s up to the Democrats in the House minority, as well as the Senate majority to keep pushing forward popular legislation to make the GOP look like shit in 2024. It’s all about the messaging, baby!
