I wonder if Donny is awake and at the omelette bar, because he may need something to throw when he hears this. The Facebook “Supreme Court” has decided to uphold the initial ruling of Trump being banned from Facebook and make it into a permanent ban.

I don’t know if this governing board will issue any kind of a rationale, but it would be interesting to hear.

There’s a bit of confused reporting right now. Business Insider is reporting that the board’s decision cannot be overruled, including by Mark Zuckerberg. CNN is reporting that Facebook has a few months to reexamine its decision.

In any event, Trump’s sidekick Jason Miller has said that the blog Trump launched yesterday, From The Desk Of Donald J. Trump is not, in fact, the social media platform which has been promised all this time, and that it’s still coming. That’s a good thing, since Trump is a man without a platform right now, and since January 8, no Facebook, no Twitter. And his message board is a farce.

UPDATE 7:35 a.m. PDT

Here’s the latest from Daily Beast. It looks like Trump’s status will be reviewed again in six months.

In its Wednesday morning announcement, the board upheld Facebook’s decision to ban Trump’s account the day after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, but said it was “not appropriate” to suspend the former president’s account indefinitely. It ordered Facebook to review Trump’s ban within six months of its decision in order to determine “a proportionate response.”

In other words, Trump is not coming back to Facebook any time soon. But it could be a different question by the time of the next election.

Nick Clegg, the vice president of global affairs at Facebook, wrote on Twitter minutes after the ruling was published: “We will now consider the board’s guidance and develop a response that is clear and proportionate. In the meantime, Mr. Trump’s accounts remain suspended.”

I guess we’ll know in November what the fate of the shitposter in chief will be. I have more respect for Jack Dorsey of Twitter, frankly. He made a decision and stuck with it. This is just some weird prolonged agony quasi-decision.

Help keep the site running, consider supporting.

  1. I am SO HAPPY to hear this! Less garbage in the world! I really didn’t believe they would keep him off of Facebook so I am surprised too.

  2. Anyone who knows me knows that I do not like Facebook. I do not like their practice of collecting data on everyone (not just their members), and selling that data to advertisers. But in this case they made a correct decision. He who shall not be named should have been banned from Facebook, and all other social media long ago for spreading lies, disinformation, and hate speech.
Now we need to get to work banning all lies, disinformation, and hate speech from all forms of media!

    • All of which were things FB has no interest in banning at all, hence today’s decision. Mango Mussolini is a sacrifice to the commerce gods so that Zuck may be spared such things.

  3. Don’t get too giddy, folks. Correct though this decision is, Hoarse Whisperer on Twitter is equally correct when this decision was driven by the selfish need for damage control. FB’s rep is in the toilet in a lot of forward-looking spaces. It wants to stay afloat, these are the decisions they need to make.

Another reason to take this as positive news: it indicates how unprofitable the MAGA maggots are going forward to FB.

    • This epithet from the French Resistance is closer to the mark, Scott: le collaborator. It was the vilest thing they could call anyone who worked with the Nazis and thus applies to Zuck.

  4. Interesting how, for Trump, there’s going to be a “review board” to FURTHER determine whether the ban stays or not but for REGULAR PEOPLE (who frequently post far less outrageous or offensive or incendiary material) can be banned permanently without so much as an explanation (much less a “full review”).

    • They’re trying to split the difference and hope to keep everyone happy enough to do business with them. Spoiler alert: not going to work this time.

    • They were told to develop a consistent policy on dealing with world leaders who threaten public safety with their posts, and apply it across the board. The six months is to come up with the policy.
