Okay, I’ve been talking about this since neighbors drove ICE out of their neighborhood in LA with nothing but their voices. It could have been so much worse. And in Minneapolis, we don’t want it to get any worse. A House member is asking them not to make it so much worse. We don’t want him to have an excuse to do what he is slavering over. Raw Story:
As protests continue to erupt in Minnesota following the ICE killing of Renee Good, Rep. Illhan Omar (D-MN) issued a stark warning Saturday, urging demonstrators not to fall into what she described as a trap set by President Donald Trump. What appear to be thousands of people took to the streets of Minneapolis, Minnesota on Saturday, a majority of them seemingly protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement presence in the city, though counter protests have also been reported. However, the ongoing demonstrations, Omar feared, could backfire should they become violent given Trump’s recent escalating threats to invoke an 1807 law that would grant him broad authority to deploy the U.S. military to American cities.
As it was said, don’t give Trump an excuse. He wants to put the military into cities. He wants to invoke martial law. We can’t let him. And there’s a hope that the protestors in Minneapolis heed the warning. It’s frightening to consider. He could start ‘small’ with one city and then expand it until people get used to it, to cower in their homes under martial law. Let’s not go there.
The protests are ongoing as of 2:30 p.m. ET, with ABC News reporting of protesters clashing with federal agents. “We have a president that is itching to have a riot in this city so that he can invoke the Insurrection Act, and that is not something that we want,” Omar said Saturday during an appearance on MS NOW.
“We do not want the U.S. military in American cities and we want to make sure that he is not going to use the anger and frustration that Minnesota residents feel after they watched their neighbor get shot in the face in broad daylight to bring about more pain to our community.”
Got that right! Getting this to the protestors is urgent. We can’t lose our tempers and incite something. We need to be calm, cool, and collected to put aside our anger long enough to go out and join others. We can be angry at home. We can’t be angry when protesting because the consequences, well, no need to repeat that. And that includes protestors across the US!
While the last time the Insurrection Act was invoked was during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, Trump has reportedly been weighing invoking the law in order to quash protests in Minneapolis over his deployment of thousands of federal immigration officials to the city. As recently as Friday, Trump warned that it wasn’t a matter of “if,” but “when” he would be “forced to act” on quashing civil unrest in Minnesota, though he remained vague as to whether he was referencing invoking the Insurrection Act.
Lawd have mercy. Trump is already hinting about it, and he wants to invoke it so very, very badly. He probably dreams about it every night, if he’s not posting ‘truths’ about it at some ungodly hour of the morning. This man is sick. He wants to be all-powerful, and it’s getting worse. And honestly, if he’s not talking about it, we should worry. Ranting is one thing. Action is another and completely different. The worry continues.
Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise, among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

You’re right, but man it’s hard.
There is, of course, that 1992 precedent BUT there’s a VERY BIG DIFFERENCE.
In 1992, the Governor of California REQUESTED federal assistance in ending the riots.
There is also the fact that the LA riots were the result of four THUGS operating under the guise of LA police officers who had nearly killed an African-American motorist getting ACQUITTED of assault (with three of them also being acquitted of using excessive force; the jury couldn’t reach a decision on the excessive force charge against the fourth thug).
What’s happening now is SOLELY because of Drumpf’s actions. HE sent federal forces where they were neither needed nor wanted for NO legitimate reason (other than whatever brain worm in his head pooped and vomited its garbage into that lump of matter that passes for Drumpf’s “brain”–frankly, there are single-celled animals with better-developed brains than whatever it is that Drumpf has).
If Trump does decide to send the US military into the streets to quell violence, and ICE are the ones causing that violence, what then? Will the troops side with ICE and an insane tin pot dictator or with their non violent fellow Americans exercising their constitutional rights?
