It is rather remarkable that Congressman James Comer, the Kentucky Republican who heads up the powerful House Oversight Committee, has already called in former Attorney General Bill Barr to testify on the Epstein investigation, but has seemingly whiffed on the single most obvious and potentially dangerous witness. Ghislaine Maxwell is currently appealing her conviction with a stronger-than-usual claim that she is protected by a non-prosecution agreement that Jeffrey Epstein signed with the federal government back in 2007, a deal negotiated and blessed by then U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Alex Acosta, a man who went on to become Sec. of Labor under Trump’s first administration in 2017. It would seem to nearly everyone that if anyone knows the entirety of the landscape of the DOJ’s case against Epstein, it would be Acosta. And yet Comer hasn’t subpoenaed Acosta, speaking volumes. Acosta is likely the witness that the GOP most fears.
Just yesterday, MS Now’s Eugene Daniels interviewed Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia, ranking Democrat on the House committee, to comment on Barr’s testimony (Something that Garcia wants released in full), and the testimony the committee doesn’t seem to want to hear. From a transcript in Rawstory.
“I also think it’s important to know that Bill Barr is hand-picked, along with other Trump administration officials, that the Republicans actually want to bring in. We have been saying, where’s Alex Acosta? The person that knows more about Jeffrey Epstein, about the sweetheart deal that Acosta helped create, about what’s actually in the documents, in the records? The person that navigated and knows more about this than maybe any single living person in the United States is Acosta. What is James Comer and the Republicans trying to hide in not sending a subpoena to Alex Acosta?”
“I’ve told the Oversight Committee, and I’ve told Comer himself, that if they choose to not be proactive on that Acosta subpoena, Democrats will work to force a vote on Republicans in the Oversight Committee when we get back from this recess,”
We see right there the utility in Mike Johnson dismissing Congress for six weeks – desperately attempting to stave off talk like this. And this does seem especially threatening to Trump.
While Acosta did have a few years of service on the National Labor Relations Board, he was nowhere close to an obvious choice to head up the cabinet position in 2017. His plea deal with Epstein became far more problematic for him after Epstein’s arrest in 2019 and a review of the files by the Miami Herald. Notably, Acosta didn’t give Epstein’s victims any notice of the 2007 deal. Something smells.
If there is anyone who knows the entirety of the direct evidence and accusations against Jeffrey Epstein tracing back to Epstein’s most torrid period (the 1990s-2000s), it would be Acosta, not Bill Barr. So the fact that he has not been subpoenaed is now a giant red flashing light. It would be a good time to contact Garcia’s office and support his efforts to get Acosta subpoenaed. That would really put the screws to the administration.
And thoughts go back to how it was that Acosta ended up in Trump’s cabinet. Reward for a job well done? Keeping potential trouble inside the family rather than out?

Does Maxwell case a case? This was a pretty large federal case when Accosta was U.S. Attorney. Rich/powerful guys wanted it swept under the rug. THAT is why he dumped the thing on the local DA. Clearly there was an understanding the local DA would whittle the case down as much as possible (to a single charge as it turned out) and that cushy “custody” arrangement.
The question is whether there was anything in writing guaranteeing Epstein the single state charge, and or leaving Maxwell entirely out of it. Granted a contract doesn’t have to be written to be enforceable but this is pretty murky stuff. AND the case DID get handed over to the locals. It begs the question of why the local DA didn’t, given the information on Maxwell charge her. Unless Accosta never turned it over.
The way I see it it became a state case and any promises or even implications Accosta made to Maxwell got flushed when he handed it over to the state to deal with.
yeah but bill Barr oversaw the investigation on Epstein’s death. missing minutes and missing video tape of the cell. Barr’s father hired Epstein as a college instructor so don’t tell me Barr doesn’t matter because he does.
As if Acosta will say anything significant at an “oversight committee”! they are all liars.
