Once again we are in uncharted waters. We find ourselves looking back not to the last election, which went well. America saved herself, the fat was pulled from the fire; but to the election before that one, 2016. Why? I suspect that it’s because we have cycled back to the same place. History rhymes, it echoes, and it runs in cycles.

We see a number of cycles recurring now. The fascism in Europe in the 30’s, which finally culminated in WWII, seems to be rearing its head again. The election of Javier Milei in Argentina, indicative of the threat to democracy, globally, is sobering. Argentina is in for some tragic days, the world watches for it. These factors all dovetail with the mounting hysteria in the United States as accused felon Donald Trump comes up for election number three. The tape you’re about to see is of a former MAGA. She states her regrets. And she will put you in touch with both the confusion of 2016, when the cult (assisted by a lot of blindsided Americans) won, and the urgency of people voting now, to prevent 2016 from ever happening again.

We’re watching an appalling chapter in American history. Hillary Clinton sensed this and alluded to it when she spoke of the “basket of deplorables.” I believe she used “basket” because she meant to signify that these were a sect of Americans. And “deplorable” became the most looked up word on Google that week, I remember it well. It held a record for the number of times it was looked up, which was matched six months later by the term auto-fellatio, during the brief time Anthony Scaramucci was White House communications director, and described Steve Bannon’s activities along those lines — except using the vernacular of the street to do so. That’s why he was let go from that position.

MAGA is absolutely a cult. It fits the description. And beyond MAGA, a lot of people voted for Trump who came to regret it. Michael Fanone, who was a Capitol Police officer injured the day of the Insurrection voted for Trump. Quoth the Raven on that.

Many other people confessed later that they were lifelong Republicans and they voted the Republican ticket. That makes sense to an extent. Where it stops making sense is when the candidate that the party puts on the ticket is antithetical to that party’s core values as they have always been understood.

Tomorrow will be an important day in politics. The latest polls reported yesterday by Fox News, and we reported them here, have Trump winning Iowa handily, by a percentage of 48%. Nikki Haley comes in at 20% and Ron DeSantis at 16%. It is possible that there could be an upset. DeSantis might come in second, or, first as he hopes to beat Trump. It’s conceivable but not likely, if these polls are remotely correct. DeSantis banked on Kim Reynolds’ endorsement being gold and if he wasn’t such a gawdawful candidate it might have been.

Iowa Republicans will now trudge through the snow, whether they’re sick or not, as the MAGA cult leader has demanded. Let’s see if there’s an upset.

Will MAGA win Iowa for Trump? Right now, tonight, that’s the way it looks. We’ll see what we’re saying tomorrow night this time.

  1. The (sad) irony is 2016 was the second coldest Iowa caucus day (14°F). Somebody has to take care of the livestock. Still, the “enthusiasm” numbers are with Trump. So even with a small(er) turnout, Trump will romp through Iowa. Which, to be fair, isn’t right given the schlepping around the other candidates have done. They went old school. Trump went Dump-a-Lago via Truth Social. Only yesterday to show up and urge voters to literally die for their vote.

    • What I think is the good news in Iowa is that the democrats have opted to do mail in voting for the democratic primary in Iowa. So, the people that had to tend to livestock, etc have another chance to cast a primary vote.

  2. “And she said, with a tear in her eye
Watch out where the huskies go,
And don’t you eat that yellow snow
Watch out where the huskies go,
And don’t you eat that yellow snow”
