The right wing will not be happy when they hear this, because they’re busy whitewashing the Jeffrey Epstein matter by claiming what a big Democratic donor and BFF to key Democrats he was. Wednesday Chuck Schumer announced that he was contributing an amount of money equal to what Epstein contributed to his campaign back in the day, to groups that are dedicated to protecting victims of sexual abuse. The Hill:

“While these campaign accounts closed about 20 years ago, and even then the campaign never controlled the two political action committees (PACs), Sen. Schumer is donating an equal sum to anti-sex trafficking and anti-violence against women groups,” Schumer spokesperson Justin Goodman said in a statement to The Hill

The donations will go to Safe Horizon, Sanctuary For Families, Crime Victims Treatment Center and John Jay College Foundation

BuzzFeed News was the first to report the donations.

Federal Election Commission filings compiled by OpenSecrets.org show that Schumer received seven $1,000 donations from Epstein between 1992 and 1997 through several PACs supporting his run for Senate.

Epstein was a prominent campaign donor to both parties, giving money to politicians like former President Clinton, former Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), former Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) and former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato (R-N.Y.).

It will be interesting to see how much money Epstein actually gave to Clinton and Kerry, but if the amount is anything like he gave to Schumer, he’s a mini-donor. $1K is chump change to a high roller like Epstein. He spends more than that on a lunch, not like the yous and mes who have to work a week or more to get that kind of cash. The wingnuts are going to have to find another strategy to drag the Democrats through the mud, looks like this one has been shut down.

Help keep the site running, consider supporting.

  1. The spreadsheet from Open Secrets that’s linked by the Hill shows $2000 to Clinton in 1992, $2000 to Kerry in in 1991 and also in 2002.
But the big donations are to organizations. (The DCCC returned his donation last year of 10K.)

    • As I said, so much for that tactic. And even ten grand is no big deal to somebody like Epstein. Believe me, he spends more on wine in a month. I know some wealthy folks myself — although not in Epstein’s bracket, certainly. Ten grand is no biggy.

  2. Time-honored political tradition for pols when donors turn out dirty as spelled in the first season of The Wire. I’m amazed that the GOP didn’t think of it first. Then again, given their sudden lack of political savvy, maybe I’m not.
