This one’s going to leave a mark on Trump’s big ORANGE face. Trumpty fancies himself a superhero, and loves memes portraying him as iconic superheroes including humans known for being awesome. Like Star Trek’s Captain Kirk. Even many non-Trekkies know Capt. Kirk is from IOWA, as “Real Murican” as it gets. The character was played by William Shatner, who by the way played another semi-iconic “real man’s man” – the character TV’s T.J. Hooker in a series of the same name. Still, Kirk(Shatner) leaps to mind when people think of Star Trek and you just KNOW Trump has said to himself (probably others) HE could be Kirk, only better. Well, ‘Captain Kirk’ thinks Trump’s notion of Canada becoming the 51st state is a bunch of hooey. It should he says be the other way around – the U.S. becomes the 11th Canadian Province!

Given the mess Trump  has made of our country I don’t know why Canada would want us but let’s set that aside. Just the idea that we need “help” and would turn to Canada and say ‘pretty please, we’re sorry for being dickish and will you take us in?’ would drive Trumpy batsh*t insane. Coming from Shatner, the guy who played Capt. Kirk who as I’ve noted Trump has fantasized being (as have most American males!) just might cause him to have a stroke!  The truly delicious part of all this is Shatner himself is Canadian!  As the Independent tells us Shatner is apparently fed up with Trump. Enough that he’s turning the tables and flat out saying it’s the United States that should be annexed into Canada.

This wasn’t some casual comment overheard at some gathering. Nope, on May 6 Shatner sat down for an interview with Fox’s Jesse Watters.  Watters is no run-of-the-mill contributor for the network. He advanced into “star” status with his own show, and in the tumult after Tucker Carlson was dumped overboard Watters found himself with one of those coveted weekday prime-time shows. Part of what I sometimes call Fox’s “Three Hour White Power Hour.” The point is that Shatner wasn’t talking to some “stringer” reporter but a news host with real (even if we don’t want to see it) visibility. Shatner had to have Watters asking himself ‘OMFG! How can I possibly spin this?’ by saying:

“At a certain point, persistence becomes insulting,” said the 94-year-old. Shatner also joked that Carney should make a counteroffer to Trump and offer the US the chance to become Canada’s 11th province. “Think of the joy! And it’s the best thing,” said the star.

Shatner added: “Here you have a friendly group of people saying, ‘Come on over. It’s cleaner, there’s plenty of power, there’s some lovely people who want to work with you. Be our 11th province!’”

“I mean, everybody’s so serious about what is an unserious offer. Tens of thousands of Canadian soldiers have died in the fight for freedom and making the world playable for all of us. You can’t denigrate that. You can’t deny that,” he said.

Again I can’t help but imagine Watters thinking ‘Uh Oh, what have I done setting up this interview’ when Shatner hit him with that comment about the persistence being INSULTING.  Look, Shatner has his flaws to be sure but he’s right about this. A lighthearted crack or two might have been something Canadians might have laughed off. But Trump wouldn’t let go and it became clear he was serious. Worse, even after being politely (this is Canada after all) no he just wouldn’t let go. That’s when we all found out Canada isn’t a place that ‘takes punches’ over its bland politeness but a place that can throw some hard, even nasty punches of its own!  And Trumpty STILL won’t let the whole thing go, so neither will MAGA and his media fluffers at Fox.

Shatner wasn’t done. Rather than back down as some in MAGA world reacted negatively he doubled down. In addition to talking up the benefits to Americans if they became Canadians he put up a blunt post on Xitter:

On Friday (9 May) he wrote: “To all of you wonderfully dear naive & gullible types out there whom I love so much… If you are angry about my posts on the US becoming a Canadian province: imagine how Canadians felt when an actual leader of a friendly neighbouring country floated that idea across the border. Doesn’t feel good; does it? Learn a lesson from it.”

Game, set and match to Captain James Tiberius Kirk, speaking not as a Starship Capt. on behalf of Star Fleet but on behalf of CANADA! Alas, in his old age Shatner seems to have overlooked the fact that Trump (and the typical MAGA) resists learning the way a five year old boy resists soap and water! Also I’d like to reiterate my belief that Shatner’s sentiment is NOT widely held by his fellow Canadians. They’ve gotten along just fine and have enjoyed a quite nice, functional country without us as anything other than a neighbor and friend due to allied interests. The don’t need the United States, which is something Trumpty and MAGAs can’t get through their thick skulls.

Well, I think it’s funny as hell that Shatner called Trump out. AND that he did so to one of Trump’s biggest media fluffers. On FOX TV air! That means Trump has seen it.  Let’s hope he got pissed and ‘checked out’ Shatner and said check included a quick look at social media and that Xitter post on May 9. It’s the weekend and therefore the time for Trump to go on one of his epic Truth Social rants. Yesterday is was MSNBC’s Morning Joe and comments made by 11th hour host Stephanie Ruhle during a guest appearance that had Trumpty all worked up.  I predict a bigger explosion at Shatner and all things Star Trek!  It has after all been ‘WOKE’ from the original series…

***Zoomers, we are always in need of donations. It’s been an especially rough month and my own health has not been great these past few weeks, which just adds to the frustration. Anything you can spare will be immensely appreciated. And thank you to all who have donated generously already. Ursula***

  1. surprise, surprise surprise. since he never became a citizen Shatner has always made a point of not commenting on US politics. I guess trump changed his mind.

  2. James T. nailed it. It doesn’t feel good when your closest friend slams you with a sucker punch. Shatner is Canadian, born in Montreal, and started his acting career doing Shakespeare at the Stratford festival.

Seriously, I think some US states could work well as Canadian provinces, including California. They would have to adjust to a parliamentary system, which is a whole lot simpler and doesn’t let the head of state pardon anyone.

    • In Canada, the Prime Minister is not the head of state, the King or Queen of Great Britain is. They retain the pardon or mercy power but it is exercised by the governor general of Canada on behalf of the monarchy. But it is exercised much more rarely and certainly not in the self-interested way it has been done in the U.S. by certain recent presidents, and especially by Trump.
