Trumpty has had a bad week and it’s ending on an even worse note. For the past week we all (especially legal pundits) have been going “Wow!” over Trump being hit for some $355 million in his New York state fraud case. Adding in the amount he’d have to come up with just to appeal all the talk has been about it coming to over $450 million and when you added in the $83 million from the Carroll judgment Trump would have to pony up well over a half-BILLION in cash or bond just to appeal. That was before this afternoon. Judge Engoron has signed (and submitted) the actual order and whoa boy – it turns out Trump’s on the hook for an extra hundred million bucks!
The final order is isn’t for the $355 million penalty we’ve been talking about. Nope, it’s for $454 million dollars when the interest gets added in. And that’s interest before the amount of interest he’ll have to pony up in advance in cash or bond just to file his appeal.
This is a breaking story so there’s not a lot of detail to give out right now. However, you can check out this article by CNN. So why the extra hundred million? Well, I’m guessing that prior to signing the actual order judge Engoron to double check the math. The way I saw it explained on TV is this: There’s the amount all the various parts of the judgment added up to, that amount we’ve been talking about for a week. Add all that up and by the time the actual amount of damages, that $355 million was announced and all the interest that’s accrued in the meantime once the evidence was all in and Trump lost his case he’d already racked up a hundred million in interest that had to be added to the penalty. I watched MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin explain this and I swear she was fighting to keep from laughing!
Am I the only one who finds it funny that Trump’s standard delay, delay and delay some more wound up costing him so much? He’s got to be wondering how much of that hundred million in interest he’d have saved if he’d just gone to trial a couple of years ago and gotten it over with one way or the other. But he is who he is and did what he does (delay as long as possible) and boy are the consequences (literally) costly for him.
Speaking of interest, let’s keep in mind that the financial penalty Trump now officially has to pay New York State is $454 million, that will (unless I’m mistaken) change the amount of the bond he’s got to put up to appeal. It’s clear he doesn’t have the cash to put into escrow like he did with that first E. Jean Carroll verdict which was “only” five million bucks. Even before this ruling Trump was likely having issues coming up with cash or bond for the second $83.3 billion award from the second Carroll trial he lost. Now this. And there’s been plenty of talk about interest and how it jumps the amount Trump has to put up to appeal to that four hundred fifty million that’s been used.
Well, the literal bottom line is that for all the speculation about how Trump was having all kinds of problems this week trying to find someone to put up a bond for him, things are now worse. We are after all talking about roughly a half-billion dollars if Trump comes up with say fifty million or so in actual cash before signing liens on other assets and properties. Now? Whatever idiot bond agency or bank foolish enough to even consider it, or even some uber wealthy GOP donor (or Russia/Putin for that matter) that might have been putting together a package (for the private potential “angels” they’d want to conceal their involvement) now the amount has jumped. A lot.
Even for rich people and financial institutions a hundred million bucks isn’t chump change.
Yes, Trump’s had a bad week and it’s ending on a particularly bad note. Wouldn’t you just love it if there was some camera that recorded his reaction when he got the news? And the footage and especially audio were to get leaked? I’d pay to see it as long as the pay-per-view outlet was using the money to fund Democratic campaigns. So Trump is going to be having a very, very bigly bad weekend. I think we’re in for a truly spectacular meltdown on Truth Social. More than one. If he has a rally and gets to talking about this we might see his head explode like all those people in the movie Kingsmen.
Only one thing could make the end of this week even worse for Trump, and more enjoyable for me. The business day in the eastern time zone where I live isn’t quite done. Wouldn’t it be grand if SCOTUS’ clerk file an order as part of an “end of the week dump” stating Trump’s request for a stay in his DC case was denied? That my friends would make for a complete Trump “explosion/implosion-meltdown” entertainment experience. I won’t get greed though. This bit of news should be more than enough to provoke a memorable response from the flaming orange human shaped rectum that goes by the name of Donald Trump.

Yikes!!!
Dumb-ass keeps on going like he is and he will be broke probably before the election. lmao
It’s looking more like before the convention. It’d be particularly funny if he went officially broke before Super Tuesday.
Yep. I wonder how much difference it’d make with the magats? They’ve been lied to since day one and when he is officially broke (not sure he was a billionaire since before 2016) he’ll say he’s a billionaire and they’ll lap it up as they have all his lies.
hoist on his own petard (blown up in his own bomb)
This schadenfreude is delicious isn’t it?
And with more to come, he’s being swallowed up in his own financial black hole.
Thank you compound interest.
A bond is not a requirement to appeal. The bond, if he posts it, will prevent the AG from collecting on the judgment until the appeals are done. If he doesn’t post a bond, he can still appeal, but the AG will be able to collect the money while the appeal is pending.
Yes, if Trump doesn’t file an appeal (within thirty days now that the order had been officially entered) James is free to start proceedings to collect. However Trump will appeal (or try to if he can post the money) to either overturn the judgment, or at least have it reduced. Still, he has to appeal to stave off immediate enforcement and to file an appeal he either has to put up the cash in escrow, a combination of cash and bond, or make personal arrangements with someone to post the bond for him. And starting today every single day that goes by where he doesn’t file an appeal he accrues NEW interest as penalty on top of what he’s already on the hook for. Before today the figure being bandied about was 87k per day. According to Rubin this afternoon that figure has now jumped to about 110 per day! Tick Tock motherfucker! But unless every legal pundit I’ve read/heard is wrong in order to have an appeal heard he’s going to have to put the amount of the award into escrow (like he did with the five million from the first Carroll verdict) OR put up a bond. Otherwise his appeal won’t be heard and James gets to start collecting. And he’s only got thirty days to file his appeal.
Or, since as he told everyone in 2016 when he said he’d fund his own campaign because he’s “really really rich” he can just say screw it and fork over the money. I think President Biden will call me up and offer me the post of Commandant of my Marine Corps before Trump would (even if he could) do THAT.
If I were going to have anymore kids I would name my son Judge Engoron. That judge knows the deal. I wonder if he made any provisions that the money has to actually be trump’s and not from those places we read about that he gets tons of money from. Thanks Judge Engoron!
Judge Engoron didn’t. It’s up to election campaign laws and those who enforce such things to be watchdogs and make sure funds requested for the election and nothing else aren’t funneled into his legal troubles. I suspect there is a disclaimer in really small letters stating any and all donations to his campaign might be spent on something other than his campaign.
Your photo of the Hindenburg is such an appropriate representation of someone who is little more than an odious gasbag himself and going down in flames at that. Karma, baby.
“Oh the humanity!” – that it’s taken this effing long!
