We should take a moment here to thank Kevin McCarthy. Seriously, we should. McCarthy is doing more to destroy the Republican party at this point in history than any group of Democrats has been able, or even wanting to, before now. McCarthy is paving the way for a good solid blue victory in 2024, with the hash that he is making out of both the House of Representatives and of the lives of “normal” i.e., non-MAGA Republicans. We’re only a few days into McCarthy’s reign and his minions are already at both his throat and each others.

McCarthy is fine with this. He believes that this is his role as a leader, to wheel and deal and he is oblivious to the big picture of what he is doing.

MAGA has a big picture in mind. They’re going to harass, destabilize, and destroy as many people and institutions as they possibly can in the next two years. And they will eat a few of their own in the process. You saw earlier today how Vern Buchanan feels about the way he’s been treated by McCarthy.

That’s a committee that will get a lot of attention and that’s why Bobo is on it, no other reason. The concept of public service is utterly foreign to her. The concept of self-aggrandizement is not.

That’s one ring of the circus. Here is Marge in another.

You can tell from her tweet where this is going already.

Now, where oh where does that leave George Santos? McCarthy was very clear today that he would appoint Santos to committees, but which ones? And how long is he going to last? Reuters:

WASHINGTON, Jan 15 (Reuters) – U.S. Representative George Santos, who lied about much of his resume and life story, will be removed from Congress if found to have broken campaign finance laws, fellow Republican and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said on Sunday.

“He’s a bad guy,” Comer said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program. “It’s not up to me or any other member of Congress to determine whether he can be kicked out for lying. Now, if he broke campaign finance laws, then he will be removed from Congress.” […]

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has said he will leave Santos’ fate to the Ethics Committee and voters.

You can see the handwriting on the wall. McCarthy intends to dispose of Santos but not directly. He won’t censure him, he’ll let other people take him down.

All we can say is, hey George, if you trusted Kevin McCarthy, there’s a whole lotta people in Washington who could tell you what a stupid move that was. Santos isn’t smart enough for the palace intrigue that is life in Washington, and McCarthy isn’t forthright enough to deal with anything directly. So what you are going to see in the next two years, most probably starting with Santos, is an environment which makes Brutus knifing Julius Caesar on the steps of the Roman Senate look mundane.

  1. The Republican party was already broken, Ursula. McCarthy is just presiding over the ruins for as long as he can. My guess: he wants to go the conservative think tank route when he gets out.

  2. A “good solid blue victory” huh? Maybe. Of course you’re forgetting a couple of things: gerrymandering, nation of idiots, and 74 million voters re-elected trump. Otherwise, sure, your logic is completely flawless.

Look Ursula, I get it. The ‘pubes are going to fuck up and will do so in a very bad way. Thing is they’ve been doing that for a long time. They’ve been fucking their constituents for better than 40 years and have managed to make their districts so secure they might be able to keep fucking them over for as long as we have elections, or at least until some other generation of voters change the political make-up of the red states. Since they’ve just gotten redder over the years, I’m not holding my breath.

I hope what you say happens. I am a congenital cynic however and this country has only managed to deepen my cynicism over the decades.

    • If hoping is all you’re doing, you need to step up your game, Spike. The reason I volunteered like I did in 2022 was because I knew hope alone was insufficient. General Sheridan put it better than I ever could: “God damn you, don’t cheer me, FIGHT!” There’s ways and means to build on the negative foundations the Republicans are setting up for us nor is the DNC shy on telling you what those activities are. It bothers that much, best get on it.

  3. There’s a factor hear that I haven’t seen getting much attention, and that is the narrow majority that GOP have.

There are enough Republicans in the House linked to the Insurrection that, if they were all to get indicted at around the same time and leave vacancies, could give Democrats a temporary majority. Yes, in some states a Governor can appoint a replacement, but some states require a special election, which takes a bit of time. If they kivk out Santos, that’s one less who needs to be indicted/arrested. Of course, they may be so vain they haven’t figured that out.

    • Oh, I’ve been putting that happy scenario on repeat for a while now. But for the time being, this is what we have to work with. I expect all hell to break loose when McCarthy makes his eventual fall, assuming our dream scenario doesn’t happen first.
