I am glad that the great satirists of yore are no longer with us. George Bernard Shaw and Jonathan Swift couldn’t make it in today’s political climate, because we truly live in a post satire world. The essence of satire is that you take something that is inherently ridiculous and then extend it outward to a level of even greater absurdity. Every cause needs a martyr. Joseph Goebbels found his in Horst Wessel and Wessel was eulogized in religious terms as well.
Goebbels saw in Wessel’s shooting the possibility of a propaganda bonanza. He eulogized Wessel in his newspaper, Der Angriff, in overtly Christian tones:

I live in NC. I attended UNC-CH. There is a plaque celebrating the Students For a Democratic Society prominently displayed where the campus meets the town on Franklin Street. This was considered a radical group in the 60s. Jane Fonda came to campus protesting during the Vietnam War. Dick Gregory came. Dr. Ford, a graduate, blew the whistle on the belligerent drunk/rapist Kavanaugh. Dr. Bishop, who heads Dr. King’s Poor People’s campaign, gives inspiring speeches, & is a national figure. Wayyyyy too simple to write off the south as ‘jesusland’. I’ve lived in fla., California, Oregon, & Massachusetts. I didn’t find the people there any less ignorant or racist. Of course if you kill all the natives & herd the black folk into ghettos, easy to delude yourself. No Virginia, the entire country is sick, born out of genocide & slavery. Established by rich white men, who are the core of the problem. Last time I checked, they control the levers of government EVERYWHERE. Smarten up.
