He has said some very interesting things. This needs to get spread far and wide. Inaction is the wrong thing to do. We can’t just stand by and watch anymore. We need to speak up, to speak out. Action is not just needed, but demanded. From Raw Story:
Actor and director Rob Reiner told CNN anchor Brianna Keilar “this may be the last time you ever see me” in response to speaking out against President Donald Trump and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr in the aftermath of comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension. “This may be the last time you ever see me because … there’s only a couple of us that are speaking out in this hard way,” Reiner said. “And I, we, hope and we know that there will be others. And so I don’t think you can destroy a whole industry.” “I’m a friend of Jimmy’s,” he said. “And what happened to him is unconscionable. It just can’t happen.”
It was that way. By the way, Jimmy’s show didn’t get yanked for comments about Charlie Kirk. He was very respectful. No, Jimmy made a joke about MAGA. Trump didn’t like that, so Trump put pressure on the networks, and they caved. Jimmy’s show was yanked. And it shouldn’t have been. He’s a COMEDIAN, after all. Trump got his fee-fees hurt. There’s more about the background of Trump’s pressure, which I won’t go into here.
Reiner added: “What’s happening now goes way beyond Jimmy Kimmel.” The stakes are high, he said. “We’re in a war. We’re in a war right now for our democracy. Trump has declared war on this democracy. This is way beyond Jimmy Kimmel. This is a man who’s a convicted felon, an adjudicated sex offender, and a business fraud, and he’s decided that our 250 years of American democracy is going to be wiped out — and is doing it within the last eight months.”
Got that right. Trump is doing his best to turn the US into an authoritarian country. Look at who he admires (Netanyahu, Kim Jong Un, and I hope I spelled that right), and who has dirt on him (*cough*Putin*cough*), and there’s your answer. Look at the people he’s attacked (such as mainstream media, schools, law firms) and how caving to him made things worse for them. Look at what he’s going after right now. If he doesn’t like something you said, which is often, he tries to crush that/them.
He’s using the military as his personal lackeys, sending them into cities so he can control them. That isn’t working out so well. There’s been a whole lot of pushback (see: Governor Gavin Newsom and Governor Pritzker). He wasn’t expecting that, and it infuriates him that he can’t control them. But he *can* control the military and that’s part of the problem.
He said that people are going to organize to fight back because Trump’s attacks are now personal. “Besides the fact that I’m in show business, I’m already a libtard, I’m already a pariah… with the Trump administration.” “There are a lot of people who are going to be standing up in the near future … and you’re going to see a big pushback. There’s no question about it. He’s declared war on the Constitution, on the First Amendment, and we’re not going to take it.” “If I’m Jimmy Kimmel, I’m suing the Trump administration,” Reiner said. “I’m suing them for abandoning my First Amendment rights. We’re going to see what recourse he has and where what recourse he has and where this goes.”
I wrote something recently, about a legal analyst who found the hole in Trump’s actions that could absolutely have Jimmy win if he sued. I hope he does it. He’s going to have a whole lot of support. But this also serves as a reminder that all of us who don’t support need to stand up and fight. I may do mine with words on a screen, but I’m still doing them. Trump could drill down in the media and find all of the independent blogs that don’t like him. That’s something for us to think about.
Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that of all of the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thanks. Ursula

since when does a corporation care about democracy? Disney wants the NFL contract
They’ll care about democracy if not caring about it costs them money.
Now is the time to boycott Disney and any company owned by them.
Our household has been doing that for literally years 😉
And there’s a merger in the works, which I didn’t cover, because everything in the background would be a whole separate column. And yes, I agree. They want the money and the contracts, and, and, and…
I can’t imagine he won’t sue plus his wife who’s a co-writer on the show, plus the band, plus stage hands, all the writers and Guillermo!
SCOTUS ruled a couple of years ago on the NRA case about the first amendment and I believe it was an 8-0 win for the NRA. Sotomeyer wrote the majority ruling.
Yes, it was a 9-0 win for the First Amendment and that was fairly recent. Suing will open up a whole other can of (MAGA) worms. There’s a lot to be taken into account besides the First Amendment.
I’m so relieved to finally see Rob Reiner in the mix here, because he’s articulate, informed, a powerful speaker, a popular & well-known personality who I think gathered his own “political base” through the years. It seems to me that the corrupt 6-member Republican majority on the Supreme Court have so far escaped being included in the “Trump takeover” narrative. They virtually escorted him back into the White House. I read that Roberts has consistently “bent the rules” to favor Trump but, I say, in fact, he makes or breaks the rules as he goes along, to suit his & Trump’s agendas. I think Thomas is a dishonorable man who has dishonored his oath to defend our Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. Unfortunately, at this particular time, the Republicans own our judicial system, from the bottom rung, up to and including the Supreme Court. At least two court members, maybe three, will retire this term, giving Trump the opportunity to repack the Court with more right-wing extremists, also giving Trump the most Supreme Court appointees of any president in history. Appointing the likes of Kash Patel to head the FBI & Pam Bondi as Attorney Genral, just adds more fuel to the fire. The current issue of VANITY FAIR (By Christian Farias) has a very unusually striking article devoted to Justice Roberts, “A Modern Prometheus: From ushering in “Citizens United” to granting vast immunity powers, John Roberts paved the way for Donald Trump’s destructive second term.” The same article wraps up, “It’s too early to tell where this-slash-and burn campaign will end up. But if nearly 20 years of Roberts have taught us anything, it is that once he rules, the nation is left to figure out how to fix what he has broken. If at all.”
Rob Reiner is an ignorant ass clown. I wouldn’t listen to a word he says except to laugh at him.
Susan, you continue to be the worst writer imaginable. Your garbage pieces are rife with lies, inaccuracies, speculation and poorly conceived opinions.
However, you love to cite other people’s work when you’re trying to get something published. Have you read the piece written by The Conversation, reposted by Alternet on 9/20/25 titled Jimmy Kimmels 1st amendment rights were not violated? I bet you did but chose to ignore it.
