Paul Ryan has been down on Donald Trump for some time, and vice versa. No love lost between those two. Ryan has been asked if he believes that Trump would be the GOP nominee in 2024. He was asked that just last month and he said, “No way. Trump had already alienated suburban voters” and there was no going back.

But that was mid-October and this is the third week of November and if you know one thing about the political landscape in America these days, you know that in today’s time that is an eon. Five weeks is a span of time which is glacial by comparison, so much can change.

And Ryan’s tune has changed within that time. He was convinced that Trump was history last month and now he’s saying that Trump is very much out there on the playing field but that he would like to see him stopped before he steps up to the plate. So say we all, Paul, but our reasons differ somewhat and that’s where this gets comical — or would be comical, if it wasn’t so pathetic.

Well, let’s look on the bright side, shall we? There is such a thing as doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. We have heard of that in our lives and this would seem to be the poster child for that proposition.

I guess we should even be grateful that Ryan and so many other Republicans want Trump gone for any reason. But how much greater it would be if it was for the right reasons, that they finally came to their collective senses one day and had an epiphany and realized, “My God. What have we been doing? This man is a monster.”

In essence, that’s what Ryan is saying, that he had an epiphany but his epiphany was along strictly pragmatic lines, screw morality. What I find unbelievable is that this journalist is talking to Ryan about “existential threats” as articulated by Liz Cheney and it blows right past the man. He responds by talking about “winning.” (And I guess, by extension, Liz Cheney’s opinion is meaningless because she lost her primary.)

In other words, I believe we can extrapolate here, that if history had happened slightly differently and Trump had in fact shot somebody on 5th Avenue, and every other avenue in America, that would be just fine with this former House speaker, IF only Trump had won his last election or his endorsed candidates won theirs. Who cares about murdering people in the middle of the street, right? Why obsess on trivia, just keep your eyes on the prize, which is winning.

Shattered moral compass doesn’t even begin to address it.

This is who we’re dealing with in the GOP folks. This is how Trump got as far as he got. And as Joe Biden and many others have opined copiously, “This is not your father’s or your grandfather’s GOP.” No, it is not. There is no place in today’s Republican party for Dwight Eisenhower, that is very safe to say.

And I certainly enjoyed Ryan’s opinion that if Trump ran as an Independent, it would “hand the country to the left and I don’t think he wants to do that.” Interesting thought, only because traditional wisdom has it that third party candidates lessen the Democratic vote.

We’re about to see whether that’s true in Georgia. There are only the two candidates on the ballot this time, Walker and Warnock, and no third candidate bleeding away 1.9% of the vote, as happened during the election.

Interesting times ahead. We don’t know what kind of times, but we know they will be interesting.

  1. It took Ryan two minutes to explain “GOP morality?” Really?

I can pretty much sum it up in ten seconds or less: “We want to win no matter the cost.”

Oh, and also, “If Democrats are for it, we’re automatically against it.”

And, as a bonus, “We don’t care about people who make less than $100,000 a year, but we’ll pretend we do to get their votes.”

  2. The Republicans don’t care about ” We the people” they only care about their pockets & keeping them full . They don’t have an agenda, they are actually still talking about Hillary Clinton, and Hunter Biden for God sake ! What is their plan for our Country? How can they help ” We the people ” and our problems, You never hear them talk about what they are going to do for us.

    • Look, our Country is meaningless to them except as a step stool to power. Our Country has nasty things called “Laws” and even though it doesn’t seem like it now, those laws are often used against ‘pubes and their bribers (let’s call a spade a spade why don’t we?). If they eliminate our Country, and therefore those pesky Laws, they can do as they please. Run little fiefdoms most likely. They do not give two shits whether the country splits apart nor if it splinters into umpty-squat pieces just so long as some ‘pubes are in charge of some of the pieces so they can do as they please.

The ‘pubes have proven, once and for all, Country means nothing to them so they will do nothing to preserve it. Why have a platform, ideas, etc. when you have no intention of benefiting the country? That said, what else do they have to amuse themselves with but Hillary and Hunter?

Cynical? Sure. Accurate? Well, why else elect dems if not to keep our country from becoming a shit-hole?
