Ah ha, the world of social media reacts to Eric Greitens, he with the domestic violence allegations who admitted to tying up his girlfriend in the basement, taking nude photos of her and blackmailing her. What’s that you say? How is an obviously out of control sociopath running in a primary of 21 candidates for senator? How we wish we knew. All we do know is that if you’re a Republican, anything goes, like the song says. And we mean any.thing.goes.

Rick Wilson had an interesting take on it.

Now: I think that this is a good idea to tell the FBI. I also think that it might “backfire” i.e. give Greitens a chance to go on Tucker’s show and tell how all the mean libs are after him, boo hoo, send me money and vote for me so I can have the nomination. This is what NPR says.

Now, Greitens is one of 21 Republicans running to replace retiring Sen. Roy Blunt.

Some Missouri Republicans have worried that if Greitens wins the Republican primary in August, the candidate could turn off enough voters to hand the election to a Democrat.

Greitens has steadfastly refused calls to drop out. A June poll by Emerson College and The Hill found that 26% of likely primary voters preferred Greitens, which would be enough to lead the crowded race.

Here is Greitens lapping it up.

You see the lay of the land. The game is called Play The Libs. The rules are: 1) Create an outrage; 2) The libs (defined, for these purposes, as normal, decent people) react; 3) You then crow about your success, take a victory lap, and fundraise on Fox News.

I just rattled that off the top of my head, but Rick Wilson, he of Republican strategy royalty of yore, corroborates my analysis with one of his own.

You are a powerful being, Eric Greitens. You control the news cycle today. You control the horizontal and the vertical. You are one of those fucking monsters, straight off the Outer Limits, that appear in Republican politics today. You are the new GOP normal. You represent the Republican id. Congratulations.

August 2 is the Missouri GOP primary. I guess we’ll find out then how well this ploy played out.

  1. MO will get what it deserves. If they use their collective heads for something other than magat hats, they’ll elect someone who will represent them in the senate otherwise they’ll get a boob like greitens who will do everything in his power to make good and damned sure Missourians never get to vote again. Getting these people to take off the idiot caps is the first step to enlightenment and voting in their best interests rather than in the koch bros. best interests. Of course sometimes you just can’t fix stupid.

    • I grew up 8 miles and the (considerable) width of the Mississippi from Missouri. Fuck em. However, the problem with your comment isn’t MO getting what it deserves, it’s that like Josh Hawley they’d be inflicting this asshat on the Senate and the rest of the country. Worse, he’d be one of a growing number of such people not just unfit for office but dangerously so. Hey, if he was a candidate for state office I’d agree with you. If that’s what they want fuck em – they can suffer the consequences. But national office is another matter.

It’s always easier to destroy than to build, and for all these miserable with their own lives MAGAts out there it’s much easier for them to lash out and do all they can to tear down other’s lives than to put in the work of improving their own!
