It looks like Ronna McDaniel has dodged the bullet this time. McDaniel managed to get herself categorized with the likes of Kellyanne Conway, when she categorized rioting on January 6, 2021 as “legitimate political discourse.” But as upset as the rest of the Republican party might have been, it looks like they’re not going to lop off McDaniel’s head just yet. Washington Post:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) criticized the Republican National Committee on Tuesday for censuring two lawmakers for serving on the House panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

In remarks to reporters at the Capitol, McConnell described the attack as a “violent insurrection for the purpose of trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power.”

On Friday, the RNC voted for a resolution censuring Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) for serving on the House committee investigating the attack, calling it “a Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse.”

Asked whether he has confidence that RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel will stay on in her role, McConnell told reporters, “I do.”

But he added: “The issue is whether or not the RNC should be sort of singling out members of our party who may have different views from the majority. That’s not the job of the RNC.”

As I said at the time and I still believe it, I think that McDaniel allowed herself to be played by David Bossie. Bossie originally wanted to expel both Cheney and Kinzinger from the party and McDaniel apparently believed that simply changing “expel” to “censure” was enough. It was not. She went way over the top by allowing January 6 to be categorized as legitimate in any way, let alone as a form of political discourse.

That said, if I was McDaniel, I would watch things carefully from here in out. The intra party fighting is getting ugly and she will end up getting her head lopped off if she continues with this level of controversy. And if she hasn’t learned to stop listening to David Bossie at this point, there is no hope.

  1. McTurtle is probably afraid that more censures/expulsions would result in the caucus becoming too small a minority to run the Senate the way they can now.

  2. As the highest ranking elected rethug, you would think Yertle would be head of the party, but he’s not. All the state parties and the RNC itself have too many MAGAts to listen to anything that the “old crow” has to say. He doesn’t have the juice to replace Romney McDaniel.

  3. Discipline Mitt’s ultrarich neice? I don’t think so. For what exactly? Being a brain dead privileged fascist who got where she is by being a member of the so called lucky sperm/egg club? Well…we know cults rarely expel people, especially those that continue to believe & are still useful. Besides, chaos is their ‘thing’. U can count on that pie hole everytime.
