I don’t know how a first 87 days of a presidency could go off much more smoothly. Biden has threaded his way almost flawlessly through the minefield, keeping the national focus where he wants it, and striking the perfect tone.
But I must admit, one thing I have seen so far surprises me. All throughout the campaign, Biden was so controlled, as were his appearances that I expected that once the inauguration was over with, Biden would remain behind the scenes, in the Oval Office, and speaking publicly only when necessary, letting the White House press office handle the day to day dealings and briefings.
Damn! was I wrong! Biden has averaged two to three appearances before the media a week, and not just shout outs on the way to Marine 1 on the way to Mar-A-Lago, but actual announcements. And that’s because the guy is so damn busy!
Every time that Biden stands behind a podium, it’s to announce a consequential new executive order, program initiative, or legislative push to get the American people back to a sense of normalcy again. And you know what? The American people absolutely love it!
As we speak, 87 days into the Biden presidency, his popularity is a stunning 59-39% rating. His Covid relief bill is still sitting at a hefty 70% popularity rating, unheard of in this polarized period. And his infrastructure plan is also sitting in the low 60’s in popularity. But as great as all of that is, and how it shows that Biden has the wind in his sails long after the end of a traditional honeymoon cruise. it isn’t the cherry on top.
Here’s the cherry on top. In recent polling, 44% of , while only 29% feel that it is hurting the discourse. The country says that Biden’s tone in his public pronouncements has had a positive effect on the discourse in this country.
But you know what’s missing from the discourse? except when absolutely necessary for grammatical purposes, you never hear the word “I” pass from Biden’s lips. It’s always we, or my administration, or The American People. And it’s exactly what it appears the American people actually want.
Just compare any of Biden’s public appearances and speeches with the nonstop hours long tirade of self congratulatory mental masturbation with which Trump made every public pronouncement. News Flash! It turns out that the American people like actually hearing their President talk more about the current national situation, and what it means to them personally, then they do listening to him talk about himself.
This is not going to turn out well for the GOP. A recent poll showed that direct GOP party affiliation is at an anemic 39%, the lowest level in 10 years. One way or another, Biden is going to get his infrastructure package passed through congress, and if he follows the same path he used with the Covid relief package, selling it directly to GOP Mayors and Governors, instead of wasting time trying to woo the GOP Senate, he is going to isolate the congressional GOP caucus from their own constituents even more. Simple adage. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

If President Biden wants to play golf he’ll do what Obama did – play at Joint Base Andrews which has multiple courses and where the Secret Service can do its thing without much fuss. Maybe once in a blue moon at a really exclusive private club like Congressional, and maybe at one of his two “home” courses up in Wilmington although I doubt he’d want the extra fuss being made now that he’s President instead of only being Vice-President. Yes, he played up there during the Obama years. The point though is that he won’t go jetting off on Air Force One on the taxpayer dime to play.
Here’s what I find interesting though. Biden’s got game. He held one of the better handicaps among political types in DC until he started running for President. A six handicap which is pretty damned good, and actually pretty impressive because while he enjoyed using the putting green at the WH (drive for show, putt for dough as the saying goes) he could still hit wood an iron shots pretty well or would have such a good handicap in the first place. However, he didn’t play regularly, which means he’s got some pretty good talent for the game. If he played a lot (like Trump has done for so long) I’d be willing to bet his handicap would be down around two or three! Biden played right around election time and by then his handicap had risen to 6.7 and he joked that if someone cared about their handicap running for President was a bad idea. Still, it would have been fun for him to, at least once he was the presumptive nominee to have challenged Trump to a match with cameras present and recording the two of them.
Which would have prevented Trump from doing any of his well-known CHEATING.
Wouldn’t it have been funny as hell to see Biden, who it could be documented didn’t play anywhere near as often as Trump take him to the wire or even BEAT him? Oh, and think about all the digs Biden could have gotten in at Trump about “We should be WALKING the course instead of using these carts!” I’m sure Secret Service agents wouldn’t have minded acting as caddies for each of them. Hell, right now I’d love to see Biden challenge Trump to a match at a place neither of them (to the best of my knowledge) has played, or at most only played a few times although I can’t imagine any member inviting Trump to play a round.

It doesn’t come across on TV just how hilly that golf course is. It’s a true hike, even if one has a caddy carrying their clubs. Frankly, I don’t think Trump could walk all 18 holes. He’d be sucking so much wind after only nine he’d have to through in the towel! And it would be fitting as Bobby Jones’ masterpiece was so influence by Jones who was, even at the height of his career what it called a “weekend golfer.” By the time he was winning (as an amateur) all those majors and his Grand Slam year he wasn’t able to play, or even practice most days. He had a law practice he was building and was starting his family and that’s where most of his attention and time went. Jones would have approved of someone like Biden who had his priorities straight, and wouldn’t have approved at all of a blowhard like Trump – and would have blown a gasket if any member of Augusta brought Trump in as a guest!
Anyway, since we never hear about Biden and golf, I thought people should know Biden can play and when he does decide to use his recreation time to do so he’s pretty damned good. Perhaps he should (as I bet he’s done in the past) invite Lyndsay Graham to join him for a round. And as they are nearing the end make note of the fact that he (Biden) doesn’t have to cheat to record a good number on his scorecard! And remind Graham of golf’s own set of ethics and honor and how one’s adherence shows their character. Graham will get the point. He’ll still be too afraid of Trump to openly challenge him but it would be funny to think of him squirming mentally over his misguided allegiance to Trump!

I wondered if he played; I figured he probably did. I never have, just never cared for golf, but it seems that some of Biden’s attributes (calm, patient, thoughtful, etc.) would be helpful in such a game. Temper tantrums? Not so much. As much as it usually bores me to watch it, it would be terrific to see Uncle Joe kick some Repuglican ass at it. I’d pay money to see that!
