It has not been a good few days for Andrew Cuomo. He’s had other members of his staff come forward and testify as to what a toxic work environment he created, with one woman saying he “patronized” her and treated her like a “skirt” and not a professional, and two male aides who said how he delighted in ridiculing them and calling them weak, publicly no less. Now Chuck Schumer has joined the fray. Reuters:

The most powerful New Yorker in Congress, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, on Sunday said he backed an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Governor Andrew Cuomo made by five women, most of them former aides.

“Sexual harassment is never acceptable and can never be tolerated,” Schumer, a Democrat, told reporters at a briefing. “Women have to be listened to … the allegations of each of the women have to be taken seriously.”

He called the accusations “deeply troubling” and said he supported an ongoing investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

“I have a lot of faith in her. I believe that she will turn over every stone and I believe she will make sure there is no outside interference, politically or otherwise,” Schumer said.

I don’t see this working out for Cuomo. This is different from the Al Franken situation, where Franken was caught in a tasteless joke. And in all fairness, if you talk to anybody who works in entertainment, it’s a sexualized atmosphere, and what might be considered over the top behavior in another business is more normal and is looked upon more laxly. I’m not defending it, I’m merely making an observation. Cuomo is in a different situation altogether. He’s got a pattern of ongoing behavior which has been construed as abusive and the charges are mounting daily.

Taking the high road and walking away might be the thing to do. But I don’t see Cuomo doing it and I don’t see this situation getting any prettier.

  1. I would say Cuomo is a typical boss in this world. That is, a disgusting little dictator with no real concern for anything but promoting themselves. We live in a society that has overlooked or made excuses for this kind of person for a thousand years.

  2. The allegations have been made so there should be an investigation.

……..being a Democrat, if the charges have merit, he will be forced to resign in disgrace by other Democrats.

If he were Republican, he would be elected POTUS or approved for a seat on the SCOTUS and cheered by other Republicans.

    • I wish I could upvote your comment a hundred times. Of course, as I’ve noted, that “being a Democrat” point doesn’t always work out (cf Al Franken). Sometimes with Democrats, the charges don’t need any merit–a wild accusation and the Democrat can be pushed out by “other Democrats.”

  3. Well, I will definitely agree that “[t]hs is different from the Al Franken situation” because Schumer is calling for an INVESTIGATION. In Franken’s case, he was unceremoniously forced to resign without getting so much as a hearing in the case. Cuomo called for an unbiased investigation over a week ago (haven’t heard or read if that’s begun or not); Franken begged for an investigation but a couple of high-profile female Democrats wouldn’t hear of it–he’d been publicly accused so he had to go to show that Democrats are better than GOPers in dealing with sexual harassers .

  4. Cuomo apparently had a rep in NYS already. Now it’s know all over the country. (I suspect a lot of governors are @ssholes away from cameras.)

  5. The dude is rich enough to live quite well for the rest of his life and provide for any loved ones. We have a much better leader with a much more positive national image in the WH showing that Democrats and our policies can get implemented and will work. Cuomo has been eclipsed when it comes to leadership on Covid and in fact the news about him (the scandal over nursing home deaths and hiding the numbers) is a lot more bad than good. We don’t need him to provide a counterpoint to Trump anymore. We’ve got someone way, way better and with a whole awesome team of people, powers that Cuomo can only dream of and the knowledge and skill to employ them effectively. So Cuomo should craft a statement that’s an actual unqualified apology and exit pubic life. Probably forever. He can only do damage to the Democratic Party and agenda at this point and it’s time that sumbitch stop being selfish, STFU and go away. For the good of the Party and the country.
