Rhetoric and oratorical skills count for a lot (maybe more than they should) when pursuing the presidency, and today at the South Carolina Democratic Convention Kamala Harris displayed her chops with both:

She made a nice entrance also:

l support Kamala because I believe she can both corral the moderate voters and excite the base.

  1. If she’s not our candidate or on the ticket as VP candidate she’d surely be at the top of the list for Attorney General. She is after all a career prosecutor and AG of the most biggest (at least in population but among the biggest in land area also) in the country. I’d say if she left the Senate to become AG it’s safe to assume her seat would remain in Democratic Party hands.

    • I sort of disagree. If chosen as a VP candidate by someone else who wins the nomination she would be obliged to accept and help the ticket, the Cabinet is a step down from the Senate IMHO.
New York’s new AG has shown a healthy appetite for dining on drumpf’s many misdeeds.

      • Both are a steep step down, especially if Democrats retake the Senate. And if the presidential candidate is a white male, the optics would be horrible of her being the VP candidate. She’d almost certainly outshine him, especially if it was Biden. We saw this dynamic in Idiohio last year, and I never want to go there again (Boring white male, exuberant, dynamic woman running mate: ticket loses).

        • I think you have a good point her outshining a white male nominee. Especially Biden. As for your opinion on AG being a step down, please read my reply to Durrati above.

      • I thought my first sentence was clear – only if she’s not on the ticket as VP (of course she might be our nominee – TBD) would this come into play. As for a Cabinet position being a step down to me it depends. First, I think many would consider either Secretary of State or Defense as enormously powerful positions, and Attorney General could fall into that category as well. All are highly visible and require managing huge agencies with an wide range of departments that impact people’s lives quite directly every day. All three are in the news regularly & more so than most Senators are. I can see how someone may feel even those three positions could be a step down from being a Senator but given how long Congress as a whole has been held in such low regard the point is arguable.

    • She turned down Obama’s offer for the AG position in his second term. She’s said in part this was because it was a short term job where she didn’t see a lot of opportunity to pursue institutional change, which is what she’s interested in.

It’d be interesting to see what she’d say to a second offer at the job. She could feel differently given the repair the justice department is going to need after this horrible administration is gone.

And yes…CA would keep its Dem seat. In all likelihood, we’d end up with two Dems on the ticket in the general election.

  2. She has said she will not accept 2nd place – and I hope she sticks to that. She is my choice for President. I think she is terrific!

  3. Living in Los Angeles, I have long realized the grave error our nation has made in electing 44 white men as president and 0 black women. If we had half a brain, that stat would be reversed.

In many cycles, her history as a prosecutor might be a handicap amongst primary voters. But if she uses that experience to propose prosecuting all of the corruption in this administration and amongst their crony friends, her prosecutorial experience could become one of her biggest assists. I think it’s a brilliant strategy.
