There is one Fox News reporter with his tail between his legs tonight, and that is the guy who put Tom Hoyle on the air for 25 seconds. Hoyle did a lot of damage in those seconds and his commentary went viral. Marisa Kabas, an independent journalist who has a newsletter called “The Handbasket” interviewed Hoyle and here is that interview.
MARISA KABAS, THE HANDBASKET: So let’s start at the beginning. How did you end up going to the Trump rally in Rock Hill?
TOM HOYLE, MADPARK DESIGNS: Well, they broke the cardinal rule with MadPark Designs. They solicited us through our phone, and we despise that. Whether it’s a bank or a company or a politician, we despise that. So we always look at ways we can turn the tables and make their day a little less smooth.
KABAS: Who solicited you?
HOYLE: Whoever was organizing the Trump rally. They said, “Hey, Donald Trump’s coming to Rock Hill. Would you like to attend this event?” And that came to our business phone and I didn’t like that. So I immediately responded with, “Yes, I would like to attend.”
So I registered with my actual name, my actual phone number, my actual email address. I didn’t want there to be any doubt that they invited me and I told them who I was. So that’s what I did. And when they responded yesterday afternoon and said, “hey, here’s where we’re having it,” I said, okay, well, I’m going.
KABAS: So the inciting event was them calling to solicit you to come.
HOYLE: Yeah, I would probably have done it anyway, but that bothered me even more. As much as I despise Donald Trump and his ilk and MAGA and all of that—I despise them. I hate them with every bit of my DNA. That pushed me over the edge and I said, here’s my opportunity. Let’s go do something goofy.
KABAS: So part of you had kind of been waiting for an opportunity like that.
HOYLE: Yeah, because I’ve taken advantage of those opportunities so many times in my life, including last year when I went out to confront, by myself, Border Patrol one day, and then the very next day ICE and Customs and Border Patrol. I don’t care for what they do, and I need to let them know.
KABAS: And where did that happen?
HOYLE: That happened here in Charlotte last year during the surge with Border Patrol and ICE. It was totally dangerous, uncalled for, unprofessional, wasteful. And so they just happened to get in my way on a Saturday and Sunday morning, and so I, you know, voiced my displeasure in my own personal, vitriolic way.
KABAS: So this is just your nature.
HOYLE: It is very much. I’m 57 and a half years old, and I grew up two miles from our office. And people will tell you I’ve always been a loud mouth, and I’m such an anti-bully. I become a bully with bullies. So maybe Gandhi wouldn’t approve, but, you know, maybe Malcolm X would.
KABAS: Are you affiliated with any political party?
HOYLE: I was a registered Republican for decades, but my father always told us we should never pull party ticket. We should vote for every qualified Democrat or Independent that we could. We always voted for people of different parties, but just about a year and a half ago, I re-registered as an Independent. I don’t want the stain of what used to be the Republican Party on me anymore. There is no Republican Party. It’s just MAGA, and they’re dead.
KABAS: Did you ever vote for Trump?
HOYLE: No, I have hated Donald Trump since 1989, as a young man, sophomore in college. What he did with the Central Park Five [now called the Exonerated Five.] I already knew I didn’t like him because of watching him on David Letterman, who I was a huge fan of growing up. I already knew I didn’t like him, but when the Central Park Five stuff happened, I decided then, “you’re dead to me,” and hopefully to everybody else.
