Today seems to be all about Trump. At least there is some different news out there. Trump can’t keep his mouth shut. Trump can’t stop trying to be the biggest and most powerful. He cannot see that his feet are clay, not gold, the gold he has splashed all over the White House. He refuses to see that he is alienating his Middle East allies. Now is a really bad time for him to be doing that, since no deal has yet been set with Iran. With gratitude for Raw Story:
Donald Trump issued a sweeping ultimatum to nearly a dozen Muslim-majority nations Monday morning, threatening to cut them out of his Iran deal entirely if they refuse to simultaneously sign the Abraham Accords — and he did it in a Truth Social post addressed directly to their heads of state.
Well, this is one helluva thing to do on Memorial Day! But then again, Trump has chafed at the rules that come with the position of president, so it’s mostly not surprising that he would do what he did. Remember, the fallen, who deserve the ultimate honor, are “losers and suckers”. It’s almost ironic that most of the news thus far is about Trump.
Instead, he threatens the leaders whose support he needs to stop the Iran war, not make it worse. Of course, Trump does not respect many people unless he can get something out of them. We have to remember that he always, always puts himself first. He uses people and throws them away (see: Noem and Bondi). He won’t be able to do this to the leaders. They are just as strong as he is. They lead nations. It won’t be as simple as Trump thinks.
Perhaps most striking was the manner in which Trump chose to deliver the ultimatum. Rather than through traditional diplomatic channels, he issued the demands in a rambling Truth Social post — and then instructed his own representatives to act on it in real time. “By copy of this TRUTH,” he wrote, “I am asking my Representatives to begin, and successfully complete, the process of signing these Countries into the already Historic Abraham Accords.” In other words, Trump’s diplomats learned of their new marching orders at the same moment as the rest of the world.
Truth Social. He did it online and didn’t even have the courtesy to do so on a conference call. That’s pretty damn insulting. Plus our own people? Couldn’t he even tell them on a call, either? They should have had a warning, but Trump doesn’t think of that. When he tells people to jump, they are to immediately ask how high. He abuses our people and our allies for something for himself. Damn. There are so many better ways he could have done this that didn’t require having a Truth Social account. That’s Trump’s rude …. Baloney.
Trump closed with characteristic grandiosity, declaring the potential agreement would be “the most important Deal that any of these Great, but always in Conflict Countries, will ever sign” and that “nothing in the past, or in the future, will surpass it.”
Y’know, the obsession that Trump has about Obama was really showing in that line. Nothing will surpass it. Typical Trump bloviating, blustering, and boasting. It doesn’t feel like this thing is actually going to be a big deal, really, if the countries sign before taking their toys and going home. Trump should know about saving face. He does it all the time. He would be much better off if he didn’t demand immediate obedience. How much has he humiliated them? And will they sign? Another wait and see.
