Trump had foot-in-mouth disease on Friday. He happened to be in New York state, supporting a Republican candidate. He gave one of his wandering, and occasionally getting to the point, speeches.  One would think that by now, everyone knows he goes off the beaten track, and then he returns to whatever remarks he’s making. This time, he busted on himself, and it was noticed. How long did the people have to stand there for this? Many thanks to Raw Story:

President Donald Trump’s bragging on Friday at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York, left the internet questioning his comments. Trump was in Rockland County, New York — the first time a president has visited the town since Gerald Ford in 1976. He was there to deliver a midterm message on the economy and throw support behind Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), who is up for re-election in the fall, according to The Associated Press.

Alrighty. He’s throwing his weight behind a Republican for midterms. People ought not be so glad Trump is trying to help them. Sometimes it backfires, and the person goes down in flames. Plus, you never know what the hail might come out of Trump’s mouth anymore. That’s a second wildcard. Well, he’s trying, and as much as we detest him, that’s one very small point for him. Wonder how many handlers he had besides the Secret Service.

The speech took several turns and strayed off topic, with Trump at one point telling his supporters: “You’ll never hear me call myself stupid. I’m the smartest guy you’re ever going to meet. In fact, I took the cognitive test. I’m the only one.”

Excuse me? The only one what? Sure, we knew he nailed himself with something earlier, but saying he’s smart? Someone should have pointed out he took the test three times, not once. And you don’t pass or fail. He most certainly isn’t the only one who has done the test. It’s been in use for a while. So, he’ll never call himself stupid, even though we know he’s certainly not smart. Surprisingly, he got through the whole speech. How did he stand for that long? Or was he sitting down? Not to mention the problems with his breathing. And now, on to the fun part!

The internet couldn’t help but comment after the remark.//// “Only the smartest guy loses the Strait of Hormuz for the entire world,” literary agent Mitch Solomon wrote on Bluesky. //// “You know who doesn’t talk about how brilliant they are? Smart people,” Peter Hopey, former columnist for The Bleacher Report, wrote on X.//// Not the cognitive test, again. We might get dinner with his friend, Hannibal Lecter in this speech,” user Mason, a frequent political commentator and Iraq war veteran, wrote on X. //// “What a complete embarrassment,” author and graphic designer Donald Capone wrote on Threads.

Yes, this was long, but the comments needed to be shared. A complete embarrassment, oh yes, indeed. How the people watching kept from laughing, we don’t know. We certainly would have. Mr. Lawler was probably cringing off to the side of the stage. It does look like Trump might have been able to actually stand for the whole thing, which, as we all know, is a major accomplishment these days. Well, the audience suffered through it, and we can chortle about it. Just another day, another Trump self-own.

See you tomorrow!

Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that, of all the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

    • Exactly! And he has to brag about taking it multiple times, when anyone else would know it’s a bad sign, not a good one.
