This is a good thing. We have people in our country who CANNOT go back to their home countries for different reasons. It’s dangerous! Noem was trying to cancel all the Temporary Protective Status orders in place. Well, she was wrong on at least one. A judge has said so in no uncertain terms. She may not be head of DHS, but she can still be embarrassed. And well she should be. Respect to Raw Story:
A federal judge has paused the Trump administration’s decision to terminate temporary protected status (TPS) for Ethiopians who came to the United States, ruling that former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem didn’t follow the legal procedure for doing so. U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy of Massachusetts penned a scathing analysis of the decision to eliminate TPS under the Trump administration, finding that it certainly wasn’t appropriate in the case of Ethiopia, where people would still face substantial danger if forced to return there.
At a guess, this is all part of Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda. It’s not like we have gazillions of people from all sorts of countries here. What’s the big deal? If someone is trying to send them back, why don’t they go first so they can prepare for the people coming? *That* would open some eyes! Actually, from my admittedly spastic memory, there are a lot of places where that applies. This whole “kick the immigrants out” mess has gotten beyond ridiculous. It’s costing a lot more, and not just in terms of time, but for everything, including severe backlash.
“As of the date of the executive order, entitled ‘Protecting the American People Against Invasion,’ seventeen countries had TPS designations. In the twelve months between the issuance of the order and filing of this suit, Secretary Noem announced the termination of twelve TPS countries — every single TPS country for which she conducted a periodic review during that period,” wrote Murphy. “Perhaps it has been a banner year for disaster recovery and geopolitical stability worldwide. The evidence, and common sense, suggest otherwise.”
They certainly do! Now, we don’t have any real details, but the only things that have changed in the world are the US and Trump. Otherwise, wars, famine, and disease are all going strong. She was trying to kick people out because she could, not for any specific reason, like a major crime. Just because she could. Why did she get off and get away with this disgusting behavior? Because she made Trump happy until she didn’t? It’s as good a guess as any. That’s difficult to understand. Not sure we should try.
Indeed, he wrote, “The administrative record is replete with evidence, including reports by DHS itself from as recent as August and September of 2025, that armed conflict and natural disasters continue to create dangerous conditions in Ethiopia. In other words, per American Immigration Council senior fellow Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, “Judge Murphy rule[d] that Secretary Noem flagrantly ignored the legal requirement to carry out a meaningful consultation with other agencies about whether conditions in a country had actually changed for the better before making her decision to terminate TPS for Ethiopia.”
This comes mere weeks after Noem was fired from her position and replaced with Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin — reportedly at least in part because Trump was outraged she shifted the responsibility for a $200 million taxpayer-funded ad campaign of herself onto the White House.
Now she’s gone, and it’s in Mullin’s lap. This is not an improvement. He’s going to be just as bad, if not worse. If he’s paying attention, he’ll back off the TPS countries and let that die down. Will he? Unknown. Only the future will tell us, and we can’t look forward into that. Considering his background, the odds are poor. They’re both wretched.
