Republicans may have “won” the shutdown war. Trump is panicking about the Supreme Court and tariffs. However, the GOP is also having a fit. They’ve realized what the Tuesday elections blowout meant, and they are actually worried. Midterms are coming up, and they don’t have a leg to stand on. From Politico via Raw Story:

Republican lawmakers, ex-lawmakers, and strategists are panicking in the wake of the sweeping Democratic wins across the nation last week in several election contests, with some calling for their party to re-strategize its messaging, and quickly, Politico reported. “This blew past our worst-case scenario of everything,” said one Republican who worked on multiple races in Virginia, where Democrats secured multiple victories, speaking with Politico on the condition of anonymity.

Ahahaha. That’s a standard pattern of arrogance for them. The Republicans think they have it made with majorities in Congress. They have “strong” representation across the US. That may be coming to an end, and they have finally realized midterms aren’t going to be easy. That dream has blown away like smoke. That surety has blown away. They have actual *work* to do, and they’re not so sure they can run the gauntlet against the Democrats anymore. As a matter of fact, they can’t.

In Virginia, Democrats won elections for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general, as well as flipped a congressional seat. Democrats also scored major victories in New Jersey, winning the governor’s seat in that state, while also expanding their House majority in the Virginia legislature. Now, Republicans – particularly those in Virginia – have been left shocked by the blowout, including former Virginia state Rep. Tim Anderson, who made an unsuccessful bid for the Virginia House of Delegates but was bested by his Democratic opponent Michael Feggans.

Remember that arrogance I mentioned? Yup. Republicans were *not* expecting anything remotely close to that blowout. They figured they would skate to victory, to that blowout they expected to have against the Democrats. They weren’t expecting it *against* them. Their arrogance was their downfall, in spades. Waking up and seeing the results in the morning of the next day was marvelous. Everyone was pointing fingers at each other.

“They just smoked us. I mean, gosh, they wiped us off the map,” Anderson said, Politico reported. “It’s going to take four years to rebuild what happened on Tuesday.” “A unit chair complaining that [the Republican Party of Virginia] didn’t do enough to win the election?” Mark Peake said. “It’s kind of like an offensive line coach complaining about the head coach not scoring enough points.” Others, like GOP strategist DJ Jordan, suggested that President Donald Trump was the driving force behind the Republican Party’s blowout last week. “The majority of Virginia voters don’t like the president, and many of them have a visceral hatred for him and his governing style,” Jordan said, referencing Democratic voters in the state, Politico reported.

It may very well take longer than four years. Anyone even remotely related to Trump is going to take a shellacking that this country hasn’t seen since Joe Biden’s victory wiped Trump off the map. Let’s hope we can do that again, even if they find a way to cheat on midterms. And whether or not Trump manages to get himself out of lame duck status to run for a third term, Democrats are still going to wipe him out.

Democrats are going to wipe Republicans off the map in Congress. They’ll remember the shutdown. They’ll remember Obamacare and what we tried to do. No Kings gave a hint of what we can do. The people of this country have seen what the Republicans and Trump have done when Trump hasn’t been in office for even a full year yet. Well, assuming we survive the next 3 years. And as a bonus, let the Supreme Court knock down the tariffs, please. Give us another reason to get people out of their offices. We will.

Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise, among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

  1. Wow, they are shocked and surprised. I guess they never thought tying themselves to Donold would be such a drag on their prospects. Finally, a majority of Americans are seeing him for what he is and they don’t like it or his actions. Like Lindsey Graham said they do deserve it.

  2. How can republicans think that starving children, dismantling the caring parts of government like the bits that look after health, disease and vaccines, or dismantling regulations in place for the common good so that rich companies can pollute or defraud to make themselves richer, or set up organizations that kidnap people off the street and imprison them without due process, is a winning strategy that people will vote for ?

Oh that’s right, they want to take your right to vote away from you so they can ‘win’ elections too.

Voters vote for policies not just for people, and they’ll vote AGAINST policies they don’t like as well.

The republicans are finding out that being chosen to govern IS the result of a popularity contest – otherwise known as an election.

  3. Clinton’s “it’s the economy” is to be hammered ad nauseam with focus on rolling back the damage done and other issues downplayed to wait until what counts as constitutional normality has been restored. How the “promise” made to the 8 pans out will be interesting as will whether or not the effete Schumer is quickly and quietly defenestrated if he doesn’t do the right thing.
