You would logically think that somebody in Trump’s orbit would have told him about this. It is, if anything, a kneejerk kind of a reaction, the first one guaranteed after a bombing sortie like Saturday night’s, if one knows anything about how oil on this planet is produced and distributed. But evidently nobody in Trump world connected the dots, because only now on Monday, after Trump’s strike on three Iranian nuclear facilities, is he waking up and smelling the coffee about higher gas prices.
Well, there’s a few problems with that. As Raw Story points out, “It isn’t the first time Trump has sent a direct order to major corporations in the U.S. When Trump’s tariffs meant higher prices at discount retailer Walmart, Trump told the company to “eat” any overages on costs.
He followed Monday’s post with another post demanding: “To The Department of Energy: DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!! And I mean NOW!!!”
The Department of Energy isn’t in charge of drilling. Instead, oil and gas companies are, and it typically takes about six to eight months for a company to ramp up oil production from a new well, Investopedia reported last year. Trump’s trade war has also altered the supply chain and increased costs for mechanical equipment and parts made overseas.
This is what America voted for, a populist shitshow, where the guy in charge does not know how anything works or connects with anything else. No matter what Iran decides to do, higher gas prices are the least case scenario.
The other amusement here, if you see it as humor rather than as Trump’s tragic stupidity, is he calls upon the Department of Energy to bail him out. Again, he doesn’t know how things work. He thinks that there are a few magical buttons that he can push and voila, he gets what he wants overnight.
Government doesn’t work like that, which he would know if he got into government at any reasonable level, such as either chamber of Congress, before he ran for president. But this has never been about government for him, this is reality TV and money. Those are the areas that Trump is expert in, nothing more. And his expertise with money is in how to grift it and lose it.
This mentality was reflected in Trump’s flopped parade. He wanted a great military show, like they have in North Korea. What he fails to understand is that the United States is a vastly different culture than North Korea — although Trump is doing his best to get us to the same level.
Trump’s panicking, in any event. That’s always good to see. The problem is that the yous and mes will soon pay at the pump.
This pampered moron couldn’t beat my adopted nine year old daughter in a game of tic tac toe, much less factoring in unintended consequences or understanding pretty much anything. Although we have seen his devastation for a decade, who knows what’s around the corner? Maybe biology will save us and the head of the cult will move on to his eternal judgement, and this cult will wither on the vine. No crime in hoping…yet. Reminds me of Louie, the head of the police in Casablanca, telling Lazlo it would take a miracle for him to leave Casablanca, but, unfortunately, the Germans have outlawed miracles.
I read somewhere that the price of oil dropped to $71 a barrel. Oil prices are unsteady and they could go up or sharply up — which you would think would be obvious to Trump. Does he not remember the late 70’s when we were all in long lines at the gas pump? I guess not.
Trumpler should be begging his buddy MBS, he who controls Saudia Arabian oil and hence OPEC, to save his ass. OPEC won’t tolerate the closure of Hormuz by the Iranians. And the assholes in Teheran know it.
Well, you seem to be forgetting that Iran is a member of OPEC. And Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE don’t have the military strength to stop Iran from closing the Strait.
Maybe if Saudi Arabia and the UAE had spent a bit of their oil money on developing refinery facilities in and pipelines through Oman (or even developed a canal cutting through the UAE south of the Musandam Peninsula–that little bit of land that juts up towards Iran), then Iran’s frequent threats of closing the Strait wouldn’t be such a problem.
