The Constitution is hanging by a thread — for now — but the rule of law took a real hit last Friday and we’re finding out about it. It’s all part of the normalization of Donald Trump because if this same story had applied to any other former president, Democrat or Republican, it would have been considered salacious and tawdy. It would be front page news. But salacious and tawdry are the watchwords for Trump world. They are the feature, not the bug. As to front page news, Trump’s destruction of the economy and foreign policy take up all the column inches, so this falls through the cracks.
You may have read about the termination of the U.S. pardon attorney, who was fired by the Trump Justice Department on Friday in a new purge of senior attorneys. Now we know why. And it is a now low in tackiness, even for this crowd.
In a interview with the NYT, Elizabeth G. Oyer says she was terminated hours after she refused to go along with a rushed, last-minute attempt to put actor Mel Gibson on a list of people who would have their gun rights restored.
Gibson cannot legally carry a firearm after a 2011 domestic violence misdemeanor conviction.
Oyer describes a careful deliberative process to come up with a list of people whose gun rights could be safely restored then her growing dismay as that process was circumvented to try to add Gibson, who had not been vetted.
Oyer said she came under increasing pressure to sign off on Gibson, culminating in a call from a senior official in the office of Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche: “He then essentially explained to me that Mel Gibson has a personal relationship with President Trump and that should be sufficient basis for me to make a recommendation and that I would be wise to make the recommendation,” she said.
Oyer still declined to endorse adding Gibson to the list.
The entire episode took place over two days: The list was submitted Thursday and later that day the pressure began on Oyer to add Gibson to it. She resisted. Blanche fired her Friday. DOJ told the NYT that the Gibson incident played no role in Oyer’s firing.
The rule of law has eroded to the barest standard: “a personal relationship with President Trump.”
Mark it well, friends. This is the rule of law. This is also the golden rule, he who has the gold makes the rules, or if he doesn’t, then his buddy with more gold does. This is the banana republic that we have sunk to. I suppose one thing is refreshing and that’s that Todd Blanche isn’t even trying to hide it. He’s the henchman, he does what he’s told, and the clearly unethical, if not illegal, aspects of his actions bounce right off him.

Gibson has a personal relationship with Trump, who is also legally prohibited from owning a firearm.
Felons of a feather…
Mel Gibson is also a member of Opus Dei (CIC radical conservative Catholic) same organization as 6 Supreme Court Justices (supported by Leonard Leo /Federalist Society): Roberts, Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch(?), Kavanaugh, Barrett. (Opus Dei, a radical organization on the fringes of the Catholic Church that is accused of serious abuses and dedicated to the complete “re-Christianization” of the world.- Rolling Stone September 28, 2024: Opus Dei and the Moneybags Kid – In his new book OPUS, Gareth Gore examines the ties binding Supreme Court puppetmaster Leonard Leo and a radical, powerful Catholic organization By Gareth Gore
I don’t think he.is Opus Dei. They’re still in somewhat good standing with the Vatican, Nope, he and his father belong to an even more far right group founded by Marcel Lefebvre, a French bishop who was forbidden to.ordain any bishops, did so anyway,, and was excommunicated vy John Paul II. Lefebvre was a Traditionalist who rejected all the reforms of Vatican II and only recognized the Latin Mass. He did not accept the authority of the papacy after Vatican II.But he was not connected with Opus Dei.
Can you please give me a source for Mel.Gibson being a member of Opus Dei?.I couldn’t find anything that indicated that Gibson was member, but only that he is part of the Holy Family.
Opus Dei did praise and promote The Passion of the Christ, the gorier scenes of which are based on the visions of a nun whom Pope John Paul ,II canonized. More mainline theologians have not praised the movie.
It’s time for us to re-listen to the infamous audio tape of a clearly deranged Gibson threatening his ex-wife/partner/victim in no uncertain terms while hyper-ventilating and screaming into the phone. Said ex-wife/partner/victim better get herself a new address and ID quickly before ol’ Mel comes around with his guns. Those “special relationships” with Trumpler include the Tate brothers, I would assume, recently rescued from the law in Romania. The GOP swamp has no bottom, folks.
“Mel Gibson has a personal relationship with President Trump”
So does Vladmir putin.
So did Jeffrey Epstein.
And on and on and on.
A personal relationship with the Mango Monster SHOULD disqualify a person from EVER having a weapon of any kind for life.
I’m thinking a relationship with this creature should disqualify a person from many things, for instance, being within 500 feet of a high school, a teen beauty pageant, or an animal shelter. But most of all, any position relating to public service. That goes for the “creature” too!
Isn’t it funny how his supplicants are sure that many people (dems/libs) who had no relationship with Epstein are surely on the so-called client list of his that may or may not exist, but it’s crickets on Sir Liesalot who did have a relationship with him that spanned decades?
