[Note: Vance responded to outlets asking about this and he says it’s a joke.]

It’s said that the universe came in with a bang and will go out with a whimper. Could the same be said of the United States? We’ve been a democracy for a while and we’ve lost touch with what that really means. The South Koreans, who have only been a democracy since the mid-80’s, know exactly how precious and precarious this form of government of the people, by the people and for the people is. That’s why their legislators climbed fences to get into their Parliament to vote and why they impeached a president who pulled a fast one and declared martial law.

On the United States side, however, we’ve been a democracy for over 240 years and most people are tuned out to what government and politics mean. We live in a dumbed down culture where education has severely tanked (also starting in the mid-80’s; South Korea was on the wax, America was on the wane.) Politics is infotainment and angertainment nowadays. Its best known stewards are photogenic, mouthy Republican women who push conspiracy theories. Here’s the latest conspiracy theory and you will blush that people are this stupid, but if they were not, Donald Trump wouldn’t be packing up to go back to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

This all goes back to the sovereign citizen madness, that the USA is not really a country but a corporation. This is nutty, yes, but so is so much of what’s on social media in anticipation of the return of Trump. For instance: Trump will swear his oath to uphold the Constitution on a Bible. Many postulate that it will be a Trump Bible, and that what Trump will in effect be doing, is swearing an oath to uphold himself. As nutty as that sounds, it is no nuttier than QAnon or Pizzagate or UFOs over New Jersey or anything else that’s been out there for the past several years for common consumption.

And you thought that the most tasteless thing that could happen would be returning the flags to full staff and breaching the official mourning period of Jimmy Carter? Silly you. Now we’re hearing from people who intend that Trump do that first thing, and then take over the military second and declare himself dictator third. The fact that we’re even having these admittedly idiotic conversations tells you everything you need to know about where this culture is right now. And it gets worse.

I can confirm all this. The Ohio State Buckeyes are facing down Notre Dame in the college football playoffs. And CBS News confirms the rally on January 19.

I don’t know about you, but my Bullshit Meter just spiked into the far end of the red zone. What the actual phuque is going on here? Vance not being present in Washington tells me that Vance is suspicious that something could take place that he doesn’t want to deal with. And let’s face it, after January 6, 2021, Trump is capable of everything and anything and that you know.

The most logical reason for Trump’s “victory rally” on January 19 is that he’s trying to gin up enthusiasm for the Inauguration the following day. That seems a bit like overkill to me, but then Trump desperately wants a big crowd to turn out for his Inauguration, unlike the last time. Plus he personally needs the juice of one of his rallies. The Inauguration won’t be a rally, it will be a transition, which Trump is already sullying, with even the discussion of dishonoring Jimmy Carter’s memory by raising the flags.

Bear in mind, Trump hates with a passion all the ceremony and dignity of the office of president. It’s not show bizzy enough for him. Even Dubya, who was woefully short on charisma and substance, could make a state occasion legitimate by having a low key kind of dignified delivery. At least he made the effort. Trump can’t do that, it isn’t in him. So he has to make it show bizzy and glitzy, with a rally the day before and who knows what during the actual ceremony or the balls at night?

Bear in mind, Trump has nothing to lose. He’s not running for reelection, either because he’ll abide by the two-term law or maybe he’s planning on taking over as dictator next week and nobody needs to run in 2028? If that sounds crazy, look, January 6 changed my perceptions of what can and can happen in this country in a New York minute.

And do you suppose Paul Ryan is still waiting for the magical moment when Trump becomes presidential? Pro tip, Paul: you and I and everybody we know are going to be worm food long before Donald ever becomes presidential.

Bottom line: I find it beyond odd that J.D. Vance wants to be several states away from Washington, D.C. on Inauguration Day. That is plenty of food for thought right there. Here’s what I find odd: the football game is taking place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Inauguration is taking place at noon in the same time zone. Even if J.D. Vance is the most devoted football fan on the planet, what, he can’t do both?

He doesn’t want to be there. The vice president-elect of the United States does not want to be in Washington, D.C. the day of his own Inauguration. WTF is going on?

  1. he said he was just kidding and would b at the inauguration. guess u didn’t see that. can’t he just watch the game on his phone at the inauguration anyway?

  2. I think the January 19 rally could be made even better as the lead-in to the Final Insurrection the next day…1-19-2025 is Robert E. Lee’s 218th birthday!! What better symbol for “Patriots” celebrating the Second Coming of the Confederacy!! I’m surprised no one has thought of it! The ceremonial raising of the US flag to full staff, in honor of Trump, and then lowering it for the last time ever…followed by raising the Confederate Stars and Bars, in honor of Trump!! Such pomp; such a show!! “Be there…will be wild!!” 🤬🤬

  3. After Ohio State defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl Friday, Vance joked on social media: “Hopefully everyone is cool with me skipping the inauguration so I can go to the national title game.” He clarified during a Sunday interview with Fox News that he was kidding and will attend his and Trump’s inauguration.
