Oh, my. How blithely all the big numbers fell out of Elon Musk’s (and all the others) mouths back on the campaign trail. We are now still ten days out from Day One of this sentence that we are collectively forced to serve until either death or the 25th Amendment gives us a reprieve. (Frankly, cholesteral may do its job. And Mother Nature is a hell of a lot more moral and reliable than the Republican party, that’s a certainty.) But already the big DOGE talk is being exposed as just that, big talk.
Of course, classic Musk move—start with a bold claim and then scale it back once the reality hits. First, it’s “at least $2 trillion,” then it’s “maybe $1 trillion.” It’s like he’s testing the waters, and next month, who knows—he’ll probably say, “Well, we’re cutting $500…

The tweet ends: “billion, but only if we can optimize the spreadsheet.” It’s all part of the drama, but at least it keeps people talking. Let’s see what the next “big plan” will be when he’s ready to rebrand it again.
The big explosion I am waiting for is when MAGAs go to the grocery store in February and they’re paying the same — if not higher — prices. That will get the ball rolling. And then the same thing in March, April, May….how long before they realize they’ve been conned, anybody want to take a guess?
If Trump does manage to undo Social Security and Medicare during his second reign, assuming that the people who are already on it can stay on it, but the next generation in line gets stiffed, Trump’s name will become synonymous with not only Hitler but Herbert Hoover. A combo of the two.
It could happen. Or, if something draconian truly takes place and those of us on Social Security and Medicare lose it, look for mass demonstrations in the streets. Look for a revolution.
This is all shits and giggles to Trump and his billionaire boys club but survival is near and dear to us all. I filed my first income tax return in 1968. I’ve paid into the system since I was a kid and I bloody well want the benefit of my social contract. Multiply me by many millions.
If the GOP really wants to commit political suicide, letting Musk and Ramaswamy and the rest ride roughshod over the rest of us is the way to achieve that. MAGA will wake up when they get hit in the pocket book. Right now they’re waiting with anticipation for Their Hero to work miracles and destroy their enemies and usher in a Golden Age — while leaving them unaffected and unscathed. Uh uh. Doesn’t work that way.
The only Golden Age on the agenda is for the guys who already have all the gold but want it all.
