Trump sometime advisor and now convicted felon Peter Navarro woke up in federal prison in Miami this morning. Having completed his four month sentence he was processed out and flew to Milwaukee to give an evening address to the Republican National Convention and it brought down the house. One reporter who’s been on the floor this week said Navarro’s speech got the most enthusiastic reception so far. If, like me you watched it it’s easy to know why. Delegate wanted RED MEAT and Navarro tossed out truckloads of it, and it was as ugly a thing to witness as you’d expect.  Unity? That went bye-bye. We’ll talk in a minute just how.

This article from CNN notes some of the basics of why Navarro went to prison and his time there. Apparently he was among “friends” so while I’m sure being behind bars even in a minimum security joint isn’t pleasant he wasn’t in a rough environment at all.   He worked in the library of the facility and as the article notes had time to write.  His speech tonight was surely something he put a lot of time into. He knew he’d be given five minutes, relatively early in the evening tonight but that he’d be seen after dinner by people in the eastern time zone and most in the midwest one could catch it as they got home from work.

Well, for starters he went beyond five minutes which should surprise no one. And given the reaction of the crowd the stage manager wasn’t about to pull him from the podium. We are told that everyone’s speeches have been vetted/edited by the RNC staff running the show. After Saturday a hasty decision was made to try and project a veneer of unity but most of us KNEW it wouldn’t last. We are told Navarro went “off prompter” in his remarks and where with some pretty intense stuff about various Democrats. He might as well have said ‘After what happened to Trump Saturday here’s a list (for starters) of Democrats you folks that are better shots than that kid in Butler was to go after!’

Here’s something else to consider. If you’re a political junkie you know that unlike 2016 or even 2020 Trump’s got some people running his campaign that have skills. That know what they are doing.  Don’t tell me for ONE SECOND they didn’t know ahead of time that regardless of what was on the teleprompter that Navarro would go off like he did. They knew what he’d say and the tone in which he’d say it and the business of part of his speech being in the teleprompter and him going “off script” on his own is utter bullshit.  An attempt to create “plausible deniability.”

It was planned!

Even if Saturday’s event hadn’t happened the bulk of these delegates were there for lots of red meat. They were restive by today and would need to be fired up. Navarro’s lie filled speech about being “persecuted”, that ‘if they can come for me like the did they WILL come for you’ was designed to be the warm-up act for “VP Night.” It will be interesting to see where things go from here.

Team Trump had made a decision to try and paint a thin veneer of “unity” and while it was playing ok with the delegates (and MAGAs watching on TV) they wanted want they got from Navarro. They wanted 2016 type fire and brimstone. The “Lock her up!” chants and all that. Now they are swimming in a convention hall filled with political bloody red meat and are ravenous for more.  If you’re Trump, it’s decision time.  Do you return to a red meat, what had been planned convention or try to stick to the impromptu “unity” theme.

We will find out in less than two hours.

  1. Threw. But, unity and democracy are going through the sewers with these [insert any word and it fits]… however “genius” is not one of those words. Or sane, decent, patriotic, law abiding (okay two words 🙄).

    • Thanks (and to Lando too) for the catch. I was talking on the phone as I finished this and proofed but didn’t scroll all the way up to the title. Mea Culpa. It’s fixed now. And a couple of small additions to (I hope) more effectively make my case.
