For a while I’ve been wondering if New York Representative Elise Stefanik had gone into the Witness Protection Program. At the very least she seems to have been hiding out in some Political Witness Protection Program. Off the radar for so long now as all the discussions of who Trump might pick for his running mate began pointedly dismissing her chances and then simply no longer mentioning Stefanik I was honestly worried about her.
Well, it looks like she’s okay. In fact, according to this NY Post Article she’ll be speaking at the RNC tomorrow night – Day Two. It doesn’t say what her time slot will be – as in whether she’ll be one of the prime-time speakers. We’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime she’s congratulating Ohio Senator J.D. Vance on being Trump’s VP pick. At least she’s putting on a brave face and showing what passes for class in Trump’s iteration of the GOP:
“I am honored to be speaking at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee,” Stefanik told The Post in a statement.
“This November is the most important election in our lifetime and Americans across the country are united behind President Donald J. Trump’s America First agenda which created the greatest economy in generations, the most secure border in modern history, the lowest gas prices in years, and peace through strength,” she added, hinting at her potential speech topics.
There was a time, and not that many years ago when Elise Stefanik wasn’t just a rising star in the GOP but being thought of as someone who would be formidable one day. A moderate from western New York she was young, smart and articulate. All of which would make her acceptable to Independents and bring back those suburban soccer moms who had been voting for Democrats since Trump got into the WH. Alas, when given the choice to spend a few more terms burnishing her credentials she got a chance to move up on the House Leadership team. The price was selling her soul to Trump and overnight she started chugging the orange Kool Aid like a hollow legged frat boy at a kegger Party.
It was a remarkable transformation and generated lots of ink/media time. But once Stefanik decided to turn Trumpkin she didn’t dip a toe into the Mar A Lago pool. She dove in head first and has refused any and all chances to get the hell out. Joking aside, her long recent silence had me wondering if she’s decided to just mostly shut up and keep her head down. Try to rescue her once good reputation by being a function GOP trooper. Make a pro forma statement supporting Trump and make a campaign appearance if he showed up in her part of New York.
And hope people would forget how she so embarrassingly campaigned (sucked up to as others including Vance did) to be Trump’s VP. It was so blindingly obvious she was betting all her chips on getting the nod. It’s no wonder she went silent once it was clear the regular, ritual humiliations she endured trying to win Trump’s approval was for naught. Frankly, she could have been far more effective and gotten something more valuable in the long-term by pledging to Trump to be there for him bigly in moving his agenda in the House. Whether Trump were to prevail in 2024 or not he’d have good things to say about her and like I said she’s young. Forty or so.
With the legislative chops she’d have by a couple of cycles from now and both name recognition and serious fundraising ability she’d only be in her early fifties in 2032. Or mid-fifties in 2036. Plenty of time to build out a Presidential campaign and a serious one. IF she’d chosen to as much as possible keep her head down and stay on the fringes like Haley did while serving at Trump’s U.N. Ambassador who knows what her future might have held? I really thought that once it was clear she was getting the Trump saying ‘no freaking way’ to her being VP, his version of the famous Seinfeld Soup Nazi (No soup for you! Or in this case No being VP for you!) she’d have started thinking longer term.
That’s why I’m so surprised she’s speaking at the convention. I’m even more surprised at the fact by apparently taking on a significant role in the campaign she’ll wind up doing damage to herself in the long run. Supporting Trump will also mean supporting the human shaped bag of toxic waste known as J.D. Vance. As the section from the article above suggests we have a good idea of what Stefanik will cover in her speech. The linked article was published before today’s announcement about Vance. Stefanik struck all the right notes:
“I don’t get into the specifics of the process,” Stefanik told reporters when asked about the vice presidential jockeying during Trump’s debate against President Biden in Atlanta on June 27.
“I’m honored to have my name in the mix,” she added.
However, I’m quite certain that if for no other reason than Trump wanting to enjoy putting her through some more humiliation he’ll demand a section of her talking about what a great guy Vance is. It’s one thing to have started showing up at Trump events again recently but staying in the background and not saying/doing anything that generated news stories about her. And her failed effort to be Trump’s VP. It will be quite another for her to take the RNC stage and offer a full-throated endorsement of Vance. To talk about what a great guy he is, what he’ll do for America as Trump’s VP etc. (If I were Trump I’d make Don Jr. or Eric be on hand as food taster whenever Vance is in the same zip code) The price Trump will make her pay is to marry herself politically to Vance. One of those “Covenant Marriages” we sometimes hear about that make divorce virtually impossible. And Vance we know doesn’t think women who get beaten and even raped by their husbands should be allowed to leave, much less divorce them.
If there’s a hell Satan is mightily impressed by Trump. He’d love nothing more than to co-opt Trump’s mojo for so easily getting people to sell their souls. But Stefanik sold hers to Trump and got jack for it. Now she has to keep paying the Trump piper to avoid being cut wide open and tossed to MAGA sharks. Stefanik made her choice and it wound up with way worse than No Soup For You! It turned into No VP job for you! And it’s now morphed into No Future for you!
Honored? I’m disappointed I’m not Satan’s chief whore but at least I’m in the harem.
Everything tRump touches dies. Her career is in the toilet after going full blown maga. We’ve seen it at the polls. We’ll see what her actual future is depending on how red her district is.
Well, the district’s current Cook PVI rating is R +9 but, the district’s borders will be changing with this election. I can’t really tell from the revised borders (since I don’t really know New York’s counties or their general voting record–well, I could go through the list but the Wiki maps of the district border lines, current and upcoming, aren’t really clear enough to make out the county lines; also, Wiki’s article on Stefanik’s district only list the current counties in the district rather than telling which counties are in the new borders) but it looks like the new district will be a little bit more compact so that the whole of northern New York (east of Lake Ontario–though not along the lake itself–to Vermont and generally north of the Massachusetts/Vermont border) will be included.
