I never thought I’d become a defender of Mitt Romney, but one thing the Trump years have taught me is that politics makes for stranger bedfellows than you would have thought possible. George Santos was on right-wing media this morning and of course he made himself the hero of the infamous encounter between himself and Senator Romney at the State of the Union address.
If you missed that, Romney confronted Santos and said, “You don’t belong here.” Romney said later that Santos, as a newcomer, a freshman congressman, should have been seated and kept his mouth shut and observed, rather than working the room and attempting to meet the president.
I think Romney’s right. Here’s Santos playing bigshot and insulting Romney.

Santos learned nothing from the encounter with Romney. Romney was giving Santos a pointer, as an elder statesman to a newcomer and I think that in politics, or any business for that matter, that’s appropriate. But Santos, having the emotional development of a 12-year-old, is making Romney the bad guy.
Now I’m going to agree with yet another Republican, and that is Liz Cheney, who said the other day that the problem with American politics is that “we’re electing idiots.” George Santos should be the poster child for that proposition. As a matter of fact, it would be a great idea for some Democratic political ad maker to use Cheney’s words as a voiceover while images of Trump, Santos, Marge Greene, Lauren Boebert and the rest of them appear on screen.
And no, I have not forgotten that Liz Cheney voted for Trump twice. She voted for that idiot and now, years later says that that’s the problem. I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she has realized the error of her ways. The GOP enabling Trump is what got this ball rolling and Cheney was a part of that.
We are electing idiots. The only reason the government withstood the impact of Trump at the helm for four interminable years was because the Civil Service people kept the train on the rails. Now, Trump vows that when and if he returns to power he’ll gut the Civil Service and put in his version of “the best people,” which will probably mean Boris Epshteyn as Chief of Staff, if not Attorney General, and Ric Grenell as Secretary of State.
I don’t even want to think about it.
Think of the old days when Cheney and Romney voted on the wrong side of every issue and we took umbrage. Now they’re the voice of reason and we agree with them — at least I do, on these specific narrow issues stated above, certainly not on their overall views.
My point is, this is what Trump hath wrought; division and the rise to power of the stupid. And I’m sure it has to blow Cheney’s mind, as it does mine, that her former constituents would rather have Harriet Hageman representing them in Congress than Cheney, after Cheney went to bat for the Constitution and democracy.

“it would be a great idea for some Democratic political ad maker to use Cheney’s words as a voiceover while images of Trump, Santos, Marge Greene, Lauren Boebert and the rest of them appear on screen.”
Yes it would! In fact there are often brilliant ideas here that, for some reason, none of the elected idiots will notice.
I’m sure Lincoln Project has pondered what a great ad this would make. It’s a no brainer, a prominent Republican saying, “we’re electing idiots” and then you see Santos, Boebert, and the rest underscore the truth of her words.
Yes. Agree. That particular idiot Santos has 80,000 pages of evidence against him, confirming his idiocy. Delicious isn’t it.
You can’t elect idiots unless the general population are idiots. 73 million idiots are no accident, nor can it be explained entirely by the usual excuses of gerrymandering, racial profiling, lack of access to information, etc., since that number voted for him after the horror of four years of his evil stupidity. I would have loved some reporter interviewing Cheney ask the following question: since you voted for Trump TWICE, after watching him operate for four years…are YOU an idiot?
And Trump loves the uneducated’s. And they heed the call from local council boards,to state legislatures,to congress. Oh,and our last resident. With a paid for degree he didn’t earn. If affirmative action is canceled so should legacy’s. If CRT wasn’t true we wouldn’t need affirmative action. So hard to grasp.
