Well, this is something else. I used to make fun of former House Speaker John Boehner’s crying jags but never again…

PNBC News on MSN

“Former House Speaker John Boehner paid a tearful tribute to Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday at the unveiling of her official portrait in the U.S. Capitol.

The Ohio Republican, who had a reputation for frequently tearing up when he was speaker, offered warm words for the outgoing Democratic leader who’s often been demonized by GOP lawmakers.

“You’ve been incredibly effective as the leader of your caucus. The younger generation today has a saying: ‘Game recognizes game.’ The fact of the matter is no other speaker of the House in the modern era — Republican or Democrat — has wielded the gavel with such authority or with such consistent results,” Boehner said, calling Pelosi “one tough cookie.”

“My girls told me tell the speaker how much we admire her,” Boehner said, choking back tears as he spoke. “As if you couldn’t tell, my girls are Democrats,” he said to laughs at the ceremony in the Capitol.“

Here is Boehner’s speech on YouTube:

And, on Twitter with some comments:

Yes, it is.

So do I.

👍👍👍

After all the hate and contention of the last few years this was truly a breath of fresh air.

Thank you Speaker Boehner for rising above all the bile and muck to make Speaker Pelosi’s moment so special.

You are a good man.

  1. Gotta give Boehner props for showing up and showing class with heartfelt remarks. It’s a reminder that there was actually a time when our leaders in DC could have deep differences yet be respectful of, and even admire each other. An awful lot of younger Congress Critters should take a lesson. They won’t of course, but they should.

  2. Say this much for Boehner…he always had a clear understanding of politics none of the MAGAs ever did. And simple comptence had to look WAY better than any Speaker his party came up with from Newt on. Pretty sure he’d include himself on that latter list; dude was miserable in the job.

    • Miserable because the Tea Party burst on the scene and started their continuing clown show of misbehavior and lack of competence. Paul Ryan got caught in the same net and now McCarthy is floundering thanks to even more tea brains in office. Sorry, not sorry.

      • There’s times I DO a little sorry for Boehner…and just him. He had to maintain a perpetual drunk just to get through the days of being Speaker. The rest of the freaks you named…not so much.
