I had just concluded that the Republicans threatened to stonewall both COVID relief and the confirmation of Merrick Garland as attorney general, and that’s why the Democrats said screw it and folded on the witness issue. But then I found this, and apparently the witness cancellation is an internecine issue in both parties.

If the Senate would agree to work on both impeachment and Biden's agenda, this would be less of an issue. But I understand it's more important to get Covid relief and other stuff done before dragging this out when GOP will acquit anyway. It's just a gamble with more human life.

And I thoroughly agree with this last person. Yes, no matter what the Republicans won’t convict. That’s not the point. The point is that we had an opportunity to put Donald Trump’s dirty laundry in the street and let everybody look at it. And the counter to that argument, of course, is that we had four years of that and he’s still got a cult following and he still rules the GOP.
But I maintain that this impeachment trial is special, because the insurrection was so unprecedented and violent. More people watched this on TV than the first impeachment trial. We had the audience and we could have made some valuable points. That’s my personal stance and I will mourn this decision forever more. I honestly believe that we squandered a hell of an opportunity to expose Trump and the GOP for who and what they are, while people were there and watching. I don’t know when we’ll get another chance like this again.
I think we made the points. Nothing can top the video of the violent insurrectionists mauling the police and openly threatening Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi. Those who were moveable are moved; the rest won’t be convinced by some words. I think Democrats losing their minds and wailing about how weak we are and how they “caved” are mistaken. I think Jamie Raskin is smarter than all us armchair lawyers out here. Keep in mind that we aren’t the general public. They got hit hard this week, but dragging on and on with “he said/she said” probably isn’t going to make any different in swaying people.
Now what is the deal with Lindsey Graham? He voted for witnesses. Does he really think that Trump’s lawyers had a parade of witnesses lined up who were going to show the public (since we know the outcome of the conviction vote) how innocent Trump is? Or has he just lost his damn mind entirely?

When 74 million vote for him after ALL the videos, audios, testimony, children in cages, etc., I have NO confidence more dirty laundry would matter one bit. The republicans will not hold a real trial, or do anything but yawn. No evidence at all to support that it would. Maybe it’s like the old man told sheriff Tommy Lee Jones in No Country For Old Men…”the more you try to get back what they stole from you, the mores goin out the door.” Get on to criminal charges & cause some real pain.

I was stunned to hear Senator Burr say guilty! At least one of my two Republican Senators did the right thing! I’ve called both of their offices. It was hard for me to maintain my composure as I thanked Senator Burr for his vote. Tillis? That was another story. I expressed my dissatisfaction without putting things into the kind of language that I’d liked to have used. I also pointedly noted that if any Democratic President had done what Trump had done that he (Tillis) wouldn’t have had a moment’s hesitation in voting to convict. I also said (I provided contact info. as always when I call or email) not to insult my intelligence, the people of NC or the country by claiming otherwise. I concluded with a line I read last night in ShowerCap’s blog: “You can lead a Republican to objective truth but you can’t make him pull his head out of Trump’s ass!”
