Reina del Cid is the stage name of Rachelle Cordova, a Minneapolis based singer songwriter based now in L.A., who was prompted by recent …er… developments to pen the following anthem for disenfranchised women – My Country ‘tis of Thee (Land of Inequity) which was released just a couple of weeks ago, on June 22.
Have a listen:
The lyrics:
My country tis of thee
land of inequity
of thee I sing
Land where my mothers cried
fought, bled, and sacrificed
for rights which we are now denied
Let freedom ring
Land of dystopia
religious myopia
I mourn for thee
Behind dusty oaken doors
six robed dinosaurs
conspired to wage a holy war
over our bodies
But the true bell of liberty
she does not mute easily
long may she ring
Her echoes we’ll amplify
marching till morning light
all genders side by side
till freedom rings.

And although this fabulous protest is sung a cappella, Reina’s stage name was crafted by combining the name of her guitar (el CID) with “Reina” which is Spanish for Queen. So, she is the Queen of her guitar…
Below is another fabulous song in which she displays her guitar virtuosity, along with the talents of her band mates “1970”, written about the enduring the ravages of Alzheimer’s Disease…
I got a telephone, but it never rings
I’m just making calls to memories
smoking cigarettes, about a pack a day
waiting for my lover, to come back to me
oh-oh
in my checkered dress I know
it’s been a long time since 1970.
chorus:
Pretty baby
the kitchen light is on
and I’m dancing to our favorite song
I’ve been waiting,
and I hope there’s nothing wrong now
Don’t know where I am,
Or who put me here
But by a trick of light,
I’m in my Oldsmobile
oh-oh
you see my best days are the worst days
‘cause I’m alive there in 1970
chorus:
Pretty baby
they got the TVs on
and I’m watching reruns all night long
but I fear there’s something wrong now
They took my telephone, but I still hear it ring
I’m taking calls from infinity
oh-oh
I know
it’s just static but I’m listening.
Thanks for taking a moment with me this holiday weekend to celebrate Reina and her important work.
I expect we’ll be hearing more from her.
Both songs are very chilling. Thanks for the share.
