This is very disturbing. You can only see the face of the ICE agent — well the “masked” face of the ICE agent. Like the bad guys in old Westerns, they cover their faces. And you can hear the voice of the man being arrested. He says he was “born in California” and I for one believe him. He speaks with an East L.A. accent. I have known many Hispanics with the exact same accent. Cheech and Chong immortalized it with their song, “Born In East L.A.”
U.S. Rep. Janelle Bynum (D-Ore.) called on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to stop abducting her constituents, a week after ICE agents apprehended a Milwaukie man born in California on his way to work and detained him for part of the day.
“These ICE raids are reminiscent of the Fugitive Slave Act, when the U.S. Marshals would hunt down and kidnap Black Americans,” Bynum said in a statement. “That was a dark and shameful time in our nation’s history—we must not allow that to repeat. Masked federal agents aren’t welcome in our state and they can’t keep kidnapping Americans.”
Frank Miranda, 46, filmed ICE agents confronting him before work on Oct. 2, demanding that he answer questions about where he was born. When he refused, agents threatened him with a dog and took him to the ICE facility on South Macadam Avenue. […]
Miranda “was handed to ICE Oct. 2 to determine his alienage and removability,” the spokesperson said. “He was eventually released the same day as arrest.”
Portland lawyer Michael Fuller described Miranda’s ordeal in a letter to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday, flagging his client’s intention to seek damages.
Asked about ICE’s response today, Fuller wrote in an email: “As Trump himself said, anonymous sources are bullshit. The fact that ICE won’t attribute its comment to an actual person speaks to the baseless nature of its statement. The abduction video speaks for itself.”
Um…scuse me. Wouldn’t it be simpler to have a data base of some kind available to ICE agents? If they apprehend somebody, they could simply plug in the person’s Social Security number and get their date and place of birth. Or, if this man and others are carrying drivers’ licenses, as I assume they are, then the DMV knows where you were born, especially in this day and age of the “smart” ID, where you have to get an official birth certificate, not just the one you got from the hospital, and show a lot of documentation before you can get the ID with the star in the corner.
It’s great that this man was released the same day but the theatrics are simply deplorable, to borrow an old term.
A database? Nah….they don’t want that. SCOTUS has given them free reign to go after anyone they want to. ICE is made up of some good ones but mostly the bottom of the barrel. Think 1/6 insurrectionists, criminals themselves, white supremacists galore. The bottom – starting with Noem who point blank killed her dog and a goat – that we know about. Each state has it’s own d-base of criminals that they are aware of.
