Watch For One Of The Greatest Political Turnarounds In History

My, my, my, how quickly the worm can turn. Two days ago the GOP was licking their chops coming out of their convention that the election was in the bag, and Democrats were panic stricken at the thought of a chaotic convention and campaign to somehow or other drag President Joe Biden across the finish line again in November.

And in the space of one short official communique, the GOP is now in a full blown campaign panic, and the Democrats have Traitor Tot by the old-short-and-curlies. Let me start with this. President Joe Biden has been in this game for more than 50 years, longer than some of my readers have been alive. In order to even consider withdrawing from the race, he had to have been shown rock solid internal polling indicating that Kamala Harris could almost certainly beat Traitor Tot with a hammer. Otherwise, there would have been no reason for him to leave the race.

That being said, the GOP and Trump have once again managed to hoist themselves on their own petards. As Rachel Maddow opined during the convention, and I agreed with her when I wrote about it, Trump’s arrogance was absolute. He let himself be fooled by polling three months before the election  that he had it in the bag. Otherwise he would never have picked a racist, sexist misogynist like JD Vance for a running mate. Nor would he let himself be introduced by sexist pigs like Mother Tucker, Kid Rock, Hulk Hogan, and a wife beating UFC fighter. Trump clearly didn’t care that he was permanently kissing the suburban white women voters goodbye.

And now he’s running against a woman. Not only that, but a black woman. And knowing Trump’s overarching, almost psycopathic racism and sexism, there is only one possible outcome for the GOP in this race, a knockdown, drag-out racist and sexist campaign against Harris. Which will only drive more soft Democratic, GOP, and Independent voters over the line to vote for Harris, or at the very least stay home, instead of voting for Trump.

There are several factors, some longstanding, and some recent that point to the critical importance of this moment. Let’s just brush over them, shall we

• For more than two years now, almost everybody who has answered a poll has indicated that they wanted to vote for almost anybody but Trump or Biden. They now have that option
• In a recent national poll from a reputable pollster, Biden beat Trump 50-48, and Harris beat Trump 50-49
• Recently Biden has been bleeding support from the 18-29 voting bloc that helped put him in the White House like a car wreck victim
• On Saturday, with Biden’s approval, Harris took part in a conference call with deep pocket DNC and Democratic Super PAC donors, trying to unclog the drain on the sudden drop in fundraising
• In the last few weeks, Harris has been much busier and more noticeable in critical swing states like Michigan, Nevada, and at least two appearances in newly minted battleground North Carolina
• Harris has always been Biden’s most effective attack dog, as well as his biggest and most effective booster on the campaign trail
• As a former state prosecutor, Harris can prosecute the case against Trump much more aggressively and effectively than the more genteel Biden ever could
• In battleground states like PA, AZ, OH and MT, vulnerable Democratic Senators are running far ahead of Biden in polling. A popular Harris at the top of the ticket could bring out weaker democrats in those states that might have been considering sitting this one out, assuring their victories
• And most importantly, black women are the single most faithful Democratic voting bloc. In 2020 they gave Biden something like 96% of the vote. But in recent polling, they’ve been evenly split at 50-50 as to whether Biden should stay in the race or not. Now they have a black woman grabbing for the brass ring
• And let’s not forget this. Abortion rights are on the ballot in critical swing states like AZ, OH and FL. Harris is by far and away the most effective voice the democrats have to prosecute that issue. Not only could she help boost Sherrod Brown in Ohio, but she could be a real factor in toppling a weak Rick Scott in Florida

Right now, the way I see it, the luckiest sumbitch in the entire GOP political universe is one Gomer Vance. Vance was a miserable flop in his debate against congressman Tim Ryan for his Senate seat. A seasoned prosecutor and politician like Kamala Harris would be bringing seaweed and rice on the stage to use to make California Rolls with him. And if you honestly think that Traitor Tot will get on a stage with Harris, I can only say, Please Dios, from your lips to God’s ear. Two minutes would be plenty of time for Harris to blisteringly refute each and every Trump lie, and still have plenty of time to make her point.

And the unity parade has already started. CA congressman Eric Sawlwell as well as SC kingmaker, and now possible queenmaker Jim Clyburn have already endorsed Harris. So has House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies as well as the AAPI Super PAC. Watch for the floodgates to open tomorrow when congress reconvenes for the week, and everybody is where the media can get at them. The mechanics of exactly how the DNC will execute the logistics of making Harris the candidate will take place over the next two weeks, but whatever it is, it’s a foregone conclusion.

And now that she’s the presumptive frontrunner for the candidacy, Kamala Harris can finally take off the kid gloves and put on the brass knuckles before hammering Trump, no longer in the support role. And her fierce aggression will make it possible for every Democrat running in a down ballot slot to put their own brass knuckles on, and hammer their GOP opponents with Trump and Vance. And how do they respond? All their best Biden one-liners are useless now.

Give it two weeks. This news came out on a Sunday, so the pollsters are going to have to scramble to update their poll questions. The polls this week will be basically worthless as the respondents come to grips with the new paradigm of the race. The polls that are taken next week should be more accurate.

Make no mistake, this will revitalize and recharge the party. For the simple reason that the changing-of-the-guard is now complete. The 18-29 bloc joined the Democrats based on issues, such as gun control and the environment. But the last three presidential cycles have been dominated by 70 something candidates, while the electorate and the Democratic congress got younger and more progressive. Don’t kid yourself, 59 beats 79 every day of the week, and Harris is much more fundamentally progressive than Biden ever was. The grassroots is going to be revved up, and the major donors are going to start writing checks again. Whatever you do, don’t touch that dial. It’s a brave new world.
