We can thank President Joe Biden for his latest move on Thursday that will close the gaping “gun show loophole” by requiring tens of thousands of unlicensed gun dealers to conduct background checks. This is a huge step that will hopefully reduce gun violence and mass shootings in the U.S. something that lawmakers have been trying to do for the past quarter-century, since the 1999 Columbine, Colorado High School massacre. This horrifying massacre was the deadliest school mass shooting in the U.S. at the time.

Next week marks the 25th anniversary of the Columbine massacre, where 12 students and one teacher lost their lives, according to the New Civil Rights Movement.

In August, the Biden administration announced a new proposed rule that would add an estimated 23,000 unlicensed gun sellers to the category that already includes roughly 80,000 dealers who are mandated to conduct background checks, CBS News reports. And Politico is calling this, “the most sweeping expansion of firearms background checks in decades.” And the reason this move is successful is due to the tragic shooting at the Uvalde, Texas elementary school mass shooting where 19 children and two adults were killed. In response to this tragedy, a bipartisan bill was passed that made this rule change possible, Forbes reported last September.

The rule will go into effect in 30 days.

Former President Donald Trump, of course, wants to be the opposite of Biden, and in February, while speaking at an NRA-sponsored event in Pennsylvania, he promised that if he is elected in November he will immediately rescind all of Biden’s efforts to curb violence.

“Every single Biden attack on gun owners and manufacturers will be terminated my very first week back in office, perhaps my first day,” Trump said, according to Reuters.

Americans widely support the closing of the gun show loophole and widening background checks to encompass private sellers.

PolitiFact notes that a 2021 Pew poll found that at least eight in ten Americans (81 percent) support expanding background checks to include private gun sellers. Additionally, two other polls that year noted there were even stronger majorities (84 percent and 89 percent) reporting they support background checks for every gun sale.

“I first heard about ‘closing the gun show loophole’ after Columbine. It’s finally been closed a quarter-century later, thanks to the bipartisan gun legislation Biden signed in 2022,” The Bulwark’s Tim Miller noted Thursday.

“Weeks after the Columbine shooting,” the LA Times REPORTED in 2008, Democratic U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg “introduced a proposal to close the gun-show loophole in federal law. It passed the Senate on Vice President Al Gore’s tiebreaking vote, but did not survive the House.”

Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) congratulated Biden for successfully enacting this measure. “President Biden saved lives today,” she noted. “Gabby” Giffords nearly died after being shot in the head during an assassination attempt outside a local supermarket. The mass shooting occurred during an official public “Congress on Your Corner” event, where six people died and 12 others were shot.

“Since 2013, I’ve fought to close this loophole in our background check system,” said Giffords, who now heads a nonprofit “dedicated to saving lives from gun violence,” that is named after her. “Now, more gun dealers will have to conduct background checks and fewer people intent on doing harm will be able to buy guns, no questions asked. Thank you, @POTUS.”

in a video clip, Biden announced this new rule and called on Congress to step things up and pass universal background checks.

And just think, if Trump winds up in office again, he’ll do whatever he can to rescind Biden’s actions on gun control. Trump couldn’t care less about saving lives. He just wants to appease his supporters, and that’s all. This could result in more mass shootings and it’s definitely not good news for parents who worry about their children at school every day and those of us who would like to go see the occasional movie or heck, even go shopping. Activities that are no longer safe due to crazed gun nutters.

All thanks to a potential Trump presidency.
