“Hey, Mom.” I heard some loud purring going on, and, sure enough, Allen was already on the right arm of my chair, sharing his throbbing furry warmth with my arm. Kiki, meanwhile was readying her claws to dig into the left, somewhat shredded side. (Of the recliner, not of me, thank goodness!)

Kiki spoke first as she jumped up to be with Allen and me. “Did you remember, we promised our friends here to show them some more pictures this week of kitties who were enjoying being IN things?” Now they were both purring in anticipation.

“Of course,” I told them, flipping open the folder. “I have those pictures right here.”

Allen’s little butt was wiggling with enthusiasm. “I liked that one of the cat that had planted itself IN the dirt. He probably figured that if the plant could grow in that big dish of dirt, maybe it would help him to grow if he settled in there, too. Do you think it would?”

“I’m not sure if the dirt will help kitties grow, but I’m sure it must feel nice and cool on a hot day.”

“Hey, look at that little cat IN the water, IN the bathtub. He doesn’t look too happy.”

“Allen, do you remember the time you jumped IN the tub? I guess when you had played in there before, it was all dry.”

“I think I was pretty shocked. I remember the day Kiki fell IN the toilet while she was getting a drink. She looked pretty drowned and wet, too.”

“You know, there are big cats, like tigers, that love to get in the water.”

“Hmmph!” they replied in chorus, leaning over to look at the picture. “Glad I’m not a tiger.”

“I’m glad you not tigers, too,” I cooed to them. “If you were tigers, I couldn’t keep you here with me in this house.”

“Oh, wow! Look at this box,” Allen said. “You can see right through it.”

His sister chimed in, “I don’t think it would be a very good place to get IN and hide.” She began to giggle (quite a feat for a cat!) That is a very strange box.”

I picked up a new picture. “Come look at this silly cat. He picked a box that he just fits enough to sit IN. He’s going to have a hard time if he wants to curl up and take a nap.”

Allen pointed to another picture. “This kitty looks unhappy because something has taken over his box and he can’t get IN it.”

“What do think is in there?” Kiki asked. “It looks like aliens. Look at their antennas!”

“No, silly,” Allen scoffed. “Those are just plants. Mom has some plants outside. They’re all green like that.”

“Come and look, guys. Here is a kitty IN a shoe.”

“She is really tiny. Or else that shoe is for a very giant person.”

“It looks like it’s just the right size for that kitten. Oh, look, here is a kitty who is IN the grass IN somebody’s back yard.”

“Now that looks like it would be a great place to spend an afternoon. I could hide there in the grass and catch bugs when they fly by.” Kiki ran over to the window and looked out.

“I haven’t been outside for a long time,” Allen said. “I like to be in our yard and feel the breeze wafting through my fur.”

“Me, too,” mewed Kiki. I like to sit up and sniff all the good smells of the outside. Can we go out there some time, Mom?”

“Let’s just sniff the inside for now. Remember, you can smell that good fishy cat food that you love, and sometimes there are flies that get inside. In fact, I would be delighted if you would gobble up some of those crunchy flies.”

I looked fondly at my special furry kids. “Well, my sweets, it looks like we still have more pictures of cats being IN things, but my eyes are getting tired for now. I guess we’ll have to save some of them for another day.”

“What do you think is the best thing for a cat to be IN?” Allen asked.

“Oh, probably the same thing that is so nice for humans. It’s always nice to be in love.”

“But always a wonderful thing to be IN, as I see it, is the embrace of someone who loves you. This brand-new kitten is off to a good start.”

“Were we really that small?” Allen and Kiki looked with wonder on their faces.

“Well, all kitties are that little in the beginning,” I told them, “but you were a bit bigger when you came to live here.”

“Do you think we will ever get too big for you to love us?”

“Never, never, no matter how big or small you are, I will always love you and will always want to hug you.”

“Of course, you won’t hug us unless we let you know it’s OK, right?”

“Ummm…maybe.”

Well, folks, I apologize for such a long diary today. There were just so many cute pictures, and I got carried away. And there are still more for another time. Thanks for hanging in there with us.
