Wacky Wednesday Critters – More Limerix

“Hey, Mom,” Allen and Kiki were already pulling down the book from its shelf. “We liked those poems you read to us. You remember, the limericks? Can you read us some more of them, please, please!”
“Come cuddle up here next to me, and I shall do just that.
And so, they did.
And so, I did.

And now, the limericks ~

An enterprising young armadillo
got a job advertising a pillow
but as it transpired
he quickly got fired
and went to sleep under a willow

“Hey,” Allen said, “Did he work for that guy I’ve seen on TV, that pillow guy?”
“Oh, no,” I assured him. That armadillo sold really good pillows.”

My dog could do marvelous feats
if inspired with enough tasty treats
But when asked to show off
he would always run off
and hide himself under the sheets

“Silly dogs,” said Kiki. “I would never do tricks for anyone.”
“Me, neither,” Allen chimed in. “We are much too sophisticated for that.”
“Well, of course you are.” I reached over and petted each of them on the head.

My friend said she wanted a pet
and her husband said, “Honey, don’t fret.”
So he brought her a guppy
She’d wanted a puppy
but he said that was all he could get.

“Poor woman,” I commented. “She must have been so disappointed.”
“Why?” they both chorused. “We would much rather have a fish in the house than a dog. Hey, Mom, why don’t you get us a fish?”
I watched them licking their chops in anticipation of the idea. “Somehow, I don’t think that would be a good idea,” I told them.

A hungry pink hog from Fort Worth
each day was increasing his girth
He flashed piggy eyes
and again won the prize
for being the biggest on earth

“Gee, I saw a critter named Piglet once in a movie on TV. He didn’t look that big.”
“He wasn’t that big, Kiki. He was just a baby pig. But they grow up to be very large sometimes.”
“Will Allen and I someday grow up to be big like that?”
“Not likely. If cats like you got to be like that pig, they would not be able to live in this house. There are some big cats in this world, though, like lions and tigers. Here’s a limerick about a cat like you.”

A cat who was named Mandy Lee
liked to sharpen her claws on TP
but her game with the roll
got out of control
and she tore it to shreds totally

“You remember that cat, I think, from another story.”
“Yeah, and what he was doing looked like a lot of fun.”
“Yes, I’m sure,” I sighed, glad that we now knew how to roll the toilet paper to avoid such capers.

I love furry critters, she said,
I pet them and see that they’re fed
They cuddle and purr
but alas they leave fur
all over the house when they shed

“Aren’t you proud that we donate fur to your household? We are very good at that.”
“Ummm…sure. I like to pet your fur when it’s attached to you.”
“Purr…We like that, too.”
“This last poem isn’t a limerick, but I think you’ll like it.”

The lovely giraffe
is taller by half
than most of the critters around
His legs are quite strong
and are so very long
that they reach all the way to the ground

“He looks like a very tall animal, Mom. He must be almost as tall as you.”
“Well, I think that most giraffes are a lot taller than I am.”
“We have to say farewell for today, kitties. Let’s wish our friends a good week.”
