There is a particular ugliness to punching down. People sense it. Speaking truth to power or not being afraid of a bully is one thing, and it’s admirable. But going back to a beaten opponent for one last kick is simply crass and it makes the person doing the kicking look bad, not the person who has moved on to other things. In this case, it is Kamala Harris who has moved on, but the sitting vice president feels he has to get in some yuck yucks at her expense. All he’s doing is making himself look like the moral pipsqueak and crashing boor that it is. Of all of the side effects that Trump has had on our culture, the obliteration of good manners in favor of casual cruelty is far and away the worse. Here’s the warm up.

That was bad enough. Here’s the insult to Harris, totally unprovoked. What do you want, J.D.? You won. In any civilized culture, that would be enough. Oh, wait….you’re MAGA, I forgot.

Interesting that Vance would choose chemical dependence and/or addiction as a tool of mockery when his very own mother was addicted to drugs. Any armchair psychologists amongst us to who want to chime in on this one?

The vacation times of Stephen Miller and Russ Vought are what we need to keep a sharp eye on. They’re the ones running the government in the shadows. Although Miller had quite the blow dealt to him last week, when Susie Wiles fixed things so that Paul Ingrassia, the rookie lawyer who was going to helm the Office Of The Special Counsel, got bopped from consideration. That was a Machiavellian coup that you’re not hearing a lot about. I only know about it from reading Rick Wilson’s newsletter every day.
There was a photograph taken on the Capitol steps of Mike and Karen Pence having a brief chat with Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff. The four of them laughed, then the two couples went their way. It was civilized. It was democratic. It was what this country is about.
Gloating over defeated rivals is not democratic or American. But it is Trumpian. And it is MAGA. Vance hopes to inherit the MAGA mantle from Trump when the latter slips off this mortal coil. Vance has an ugly mouth, like Trump, but he’s not the charismatic cult leader, darling of the tabloids. Vance doesn’t have that in his wheelhouse. He’s way too dull.
So Vance is going to find himself out in the political weeds at some point. Of that I feel sure. Somebody will carry the MAGA torch, but it won’t be him. And there may be three parties in this country, some iteration of the GOP, MAGA, and the Democrats. We can’t know at this point. But I do not, I repeat NOT, see Vance as Trump II. Ain’t gonna happen. Vance is a second banana, not a leader. That’s how it’s going to stay.
How ironic that Vance would make a crack about sleeping extra late. And then doing something worthless. Trump’s routine of sleep late then watch some TV, not even get downstairs to the Oval Office until mid day and then watching more TV!
Too bad Harris is young enough to still have a future in the Democratic Party either as a candidate again or a power broker role. There are a number of hilarious ‘Vance fucking the couch’ memes out there! Yes, I know the myth he wrote about doing that in his book has been debunked by SNOPES and other credible fact checkers but that so many people believed lit says something about Vance,
Here’s what I am sure of when it comes to J.D. Vance. He wants and even expects to inherit the role as leader of MAGA when Trump is gone. Trump has I’m sure set things up so that when Vance tries things will come out that destroy any chance of that happening. Trump would have Wiles, Miller and others do such a thing just for the fun of screwing Vance over but J.D. has given Trumpty Dumpty actual reasons to have him politically disemboweled when the time comes. Only Vance doesn’t seem to be able to see that.
His eventual distress will be epic and I plan to savor every bit of it like a gourmet meal.
vance will (probably) get the title but vought and miller will keep the job. that’s the whole point to consolidating power.
