Maybe Donald Trump just has a vision problem. Ya spose? Maybe he looks at things and doesn’t see just one but he sees multiples. Many multiples, in fact. Reports are now coming in from South Carolina as to how many people actually attended the Pickens County rally on Saturday. Trump, as you may have heard, proudly stood up and announced that 75,000 people were in attendance. This is in a town of 3,000 and very little parking. Did they bus in from Charlestown, or parachute from the sky, or what exactly? Greenville News:

Pre-rally estimates of 10,000 to 30,000 were made. During his remarks, Trump claimed the turnout was 75,000. [Police Chief] Beach said he needed to get an accurate count from the Secret Service before providing a final number. Around 11 a.m., a secret service agent told the News there are 5,000 inside the gate and approximately 10,000 still in line.

I think the 5,000 inside the gate figure is probably accurate because the fire departments in each city estimate how many people a given venue can hold. And to be generous, let’s go ahead and agree that 10,000 were in line, somehow. They found a place to park and they got in line. Fine. Even then, that’s 15,000 and 15,000 is a far cry from 75,000

But, there’s a logical issue here and let’s address it. If, granting for the sake of argument, an extra 10,000 wanted to hear Trump or even using Trump’s number, another 70,000 wanted to hear Trump, why oh why not book a stadium? Why strain the resources of these little whistle stops when there’s that kind of interest?

Never Trumper Jennifer Rubin was on MSNBC today and she said that Trump’s team books him into tiny hamlets because he can’t fill the large venues.

The Greenville News reported that “Trump spoke for nearly an hour and a half, and people began leaving before he finished due to the extreme heat.” Maybe they left because they were bored. There is nothing new in his pitch.

Trump comes to these gatherings of the hardcore faithful to do therapy sessions. There and only there can he be the victim, the martyr and be surrounded by people sympathetic to his cause. Poor Donald. The victim of political theater, of the evil Deep State. Poor poor man. So good, yet so persecuted.

As Rubin points out, he won’t get on a debate stage so maybe he’ll wear thin. Who knows? What we do know is that he’s making zero effort to win over Independents. And maybe there’s no point. Maybe this election is like the last one and people are already decided.

Right now the only Republican running any kind of an interesting campaign is Chris Christie. I would give anything to see Trump debate him. And a Pence/Trump debate would be epic. Likewise a Trump/DeSantis match off. But Trump intends to sail to the top of the ticket without debating anybody because he doesn’t want to look bad. And maybe that’s how it will go down.

  1. I’m sorry, but I don’t recall a time when traitor tot ever looked good. Maybe I don’t wear the right kind of glasses.

  3. I agree there’s a fear he can’t fill large venues anymore. Actually he often failed to pack the house in the “glory days” but the ever obliging media wouldn’t sneak someone into position BEHIND Trump/the stage to pan the full arena/area! Still, he’d get some pretty large crowds but seldom (if ever) what he claimed. However there’s another reason for him to not book larger venues. He’s a cheap bastard to begin with and he’s under increasing financial pressure. Cash flow problems and under the best of circumstances juggling all the balls in the air was tough for him. Now the circumstances are anything but the best. His mounting legal problems are costing him a lot of money – lawyers have wised up and are demanding upfront retainers so there’s that. However even in red states or portions of states that are red folks have wised up. Trump stiffed too many venues and too many municipalties for the costs to rent a big place, LE to provide crowed control and cleanup. So THEY have started demanding payment upfront too! It’s been too long coming but even some folks who support him, at least those who have or control significant money have wised up. Oh, they will still probably vote for him but they are going to keep their hands on their wallets when it comes to doing business with him! That’s why you’ve been starting to see events in out-of-the-way places or small communities – it’s harder to find suckers but they are still out there. The business owners who are also the politicians or best buds with those who are talk themselves into believing they will clean up financially, that the Trump event will be a windfall both for them and their community. And of course the actual costs wind up wiping it all out.

    • The reality is that it’s “impressive” that he gets even the 5K or 10K. Those are the hard core followers. That’s the cult. And many of these people follow him from rally to rally. How many I don’t know. THAT would be an interesting stat to have, definitely.

My point is that he’s got to win over Independents and blocks of people he’s alienated. And he’s doing zip to do that, by complaining about how people are mean to him.

    • you must be watching the wrong media. I saw reports of empty venues and people leaving early many times. It seems the real events these clowns are looking for happen before Trump’s blithering speeches, outside the venue. That’s where they join their tribe, brainwashed, red-hatted, clowns in red white and blue costumes following dear leader.

  4. All those 10,000 cult followers waiting in the extreme heat under the hot sun of South Carolina , I must admit, the guy has sway.
    Poor little darlings…

  5. There is mathematics and Trumpatics. They differ in terms of degree with Trumpatics having a value of roughly 10 to one over mathematics.

  6. It’s not that impressive. The Grateful Dead had a bigger following of deadheads that followed them around the country.
