We are 68 days away from November 5. Wowie, zowie. This two-year long campaign of Donald Trump’s and the fact that he’s been polluting politics for nine years now, has made this process of seeing him dominate our public life seem endless and unendurable. There are kids in third or fourth grade now who see Trump and think that this is “normal” politics. I don’t envy their parents in trying to explain things to them. And then there are kids who are voting age this year and they’ve been aware of Trump since they were nine. They may be deluded enough to cast a vote for him, at least some of them. To them he is normal as well.

But imagine growing up in a world where Trump is “normal.” When I was a kid Mr. Eisenhower was president forever and then that awful Mr. Nixon ran against that wonderful Mr. Kennedy in 1960. I was seven, but I remember it well. I wonder how my worldview would be if I had grown up with “Grab ’em by the pussy,” coming out of a politician’s mouth?” instead of “We can go to the moon by the end of this decade?” Seriously. The 60’s were a wonderful decade to grow up in, the “wonder years” when all was possible.

Here’s the latest folderol from Trump. He doesn’t like “woke” generals and they will be gone along with the entire Civil Service when he gets back in office. Swell.

The obvious MAGA general is Mike Flynn. And he would probably dub other generals of his choosing as MAGA generals. This could turn into Dr. Strangelove overnight.

That’s pretty much the size of it. Flynn may be an anomaly but I seriously doubt that he’s unique. I’m sure there are enough right-wing dangerous fanatic generals to make General Jack D. Ripper look fairly mundane. Flynn’s brother is also a general and he was in the military and part of the communications back and forth between the Capitol and the Army and Pentagon on January 6. There’s some ambiguity whether Charles Flynn shares his brother Michael’s conspiracy theory that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump, but there’s no ambiguity that he was present during the phone calls that took place that day, even though that fact was initially denied by the Army.

You recall how slow the military response to Washington was that day. I don’t think you need to be wearing a tinfoil hat to speculate that if Trump gets in and does to the military what he intends to do to the Civil Service, we have been delivered to the door of martial law and fascist takeover. It would be perilously naive to think otherwise.

Let’s take Trump at his word. He wants to get rid of “woke” generals, let’s believe him. He wants to be “dictator for one day,” let’s believe that, too. This isn’t a TV show this is our way of life at stake.

  2. That didn’t work out very well for Josef Stalin when he purged the Soviet army of the most competent and accomplished Generals, because like Geriatric Jesus, he feared their power as a threat to his rule.

    Had it not been for General Zhukov, who Stalin had banished to Siberia, but did not kill, the Russians would be walking around Heiling each other to this day.

    Those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it.
