You read here yesterday how Mike Huckabee prophesied that if Donald Trump didn’t win in 2024 then, by God, in 2028 the election would be determined by bullets and not ballots. So there, take that. Mike, we don’t have any pearls left to clutch, we ruined out last strand when collapsing the last time on the fainting couch that we libs furnish our houses with.

Then at the Yankees game Wednesday night, the Trump Or Death banner you see above was unfurled. Listen closely, you’ll hear the laughter followed by “take it down.”

Then Matt Gaetz kicked in his two cents. Listen to that here, and let the tape run long enough to catch whiny little bitch Ron DeSantis talk about all the fascist deeds he intends to do his first day in office. If this man is DeFuture of the GOP, I merely pray that they have enough class to leave Abraham Lincoln out of it.

Now, back on Planet Earth here’s what’s going on. Noah Smith has written several articles on this topic in his Noahpinion blog and you should read them all. Power may “grow out the barrel of a gun” as Chairman Mao opined and we don’t dispute that. Nor do we dispute how many MAGA loonies are out there, armed to the death. The fact is, that if Trump doesn’t win in 2024, which is very likely, it’s all a moot point. The military may have initially been on Trump’s side, but that’s long over. They’re not going to initiate a coup on their own. And with Trump losing in 2024, the successor to the Proud Boys or Stewart Rhodes’ disciples, whomever, may try to do Insurrection II, but it is likely to end even worse than Insurrection I. The military will be called into action and there’s no way these ragtag clowns are going to hold up against the might of the armed forces. That was true in the 1860s and it’s even truer today.

The U.S. Military Won’t Allow An Insurrection

Four and a half years ago, in the wake of Trump’s electoral victory, I wrote a blog post worrying about the possibility of a civil war in America. I don’t like to write posts like that (or like the one I’m writing now); it’s just something one occasionally has to do, because the alternative is hiding under a rock and waiting for the storms of history to pass. Anyway, I had been reading a bunch of history books about the Spanish Civil War, and I fretted that liberals and leftists in the U.S. were walking into a similar catastrophe:

[L]ike Spain [before its Civil War], the military leans to the right (though perhaps not quite as much). In America, the right also controls most of the roughly 300 million privately owned guns.

This means that if the U.S. had a civil war along currently existing left-right lines – i.e., Republican voters vs. Democratic voters – the right would win. It would probably win more quickly and decisively than the Spanish right won…

I think many on the intellectual, elite left in America fail to realize this danger, or the probability of this scenario. From most left-leaning intellectuals I see only increasing stridency and demands for ideological purity

I worry that this attitude, and these tactics, depend crucially on the assumption that we live in a constitutional, democratic regime that is so unshakably stable that raised fists, angry op-eds, and the ballot box will always be able to prevail. I worry that they have forgotten Mao’s adage that “power grows out of the barrel of a gun,” and that the other side – as the sides are currently drawn – has all the guns.

I advised liberals and leftists to moderate their tone, in the hope of winning over wavering centrists, especially in the military.

I think my message — that liberals needed to think through to the possibility of violent conflict, and not simply put it out of their minds — was a good one. And my advice not to give in to extremism and to build an ideological big tent, in order not to lose such a conflict, was and is sound advice. But I now think that my post was wrong in one huge, important respect: I underestimated the U.S. Military.

Oh yes, Trump may have started out with the support of the police and the military but that support eroded over the years, particularly with on the military end. They were polled in 2020 and voted for Biden over Trump. I think a chief factor is that they simply didn’t know from day to day if they were going to be put into a Dr. Strangelove scenario and next to that, Civil War II, guns and civilians in the streets, was scarcely a frightening proposition.

Crucially, the officer corps was even more strongly against Trump than the enlisted. At this point it started to become clear that we were not in a Spain 1936 type of situation — the military brass might split along partisan lines in the event of a conflict, but Trump would not have the majority on his side.

My dawning realization was reinforced during the George Floyd protests, when Trump tried to get the U.S. Military to act as riot police and quell the protests. I recall watching General Mark Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, walk through D.C. and deliver a pro-protest message to a news crew. This was followed by a series of pro-protest messages from high-level active-duty members of every branch of the Armed Forces. A few weeks later it came out that Milley had shouted down Trump in the Oval Office.

After these pivotal events, I realized that the military was not on Trump’s side. The largest protests in American history, accompanied by looting in every major city, were not enough to induce the Armed Forces to betray their oaths and turn on the American people, even when exhorted to do so by a sitting President. To me, that was the decisive moment.

Now a new book by Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker reveals just how very not-on-Trump’s-side the top brass were:

Milley spoke to friends, lawmakers and colleagues about the threat of a coup, and the Joint Chiefs chairman felt he had to be “on guard” for what might come.

“They may try, but they’re not going to f**king succeed,” Milley told his deputies, according to the authors. “You can’t do this without the military. You can’t do this without the CIA and the FBI. We’re the guys with the guns.”…

Milley viewed Trump as “the classic authoritarian leader with nothing to lose,” the authors write, and he saw parallels between Adolf Hitler’s rhetoric as a victim and savior and Trump’s false claims of election fraud.

“This is a Reichstag moment,” Milley told aides, according to the book. “The gospel of the Führer.”

Ahead of a November pro-Trump “Million MAGA March” to protest the election results, Milley told aides he feared it “could be the modern American equivalent of ‘brownshirts in the streets,'”…

After January 6, Milley participated in a drill with military and law enforcement leaders to prepare for the January 20 inauguration…

Milley told a group of senior leaders, “Here’s the deal, guys: These guys are Nazis, they’re boogaloo boys, they’re Proud Boys. These are the same people we fought in World War II. We’re going to put a ring of steel around this city and the Nazis aren’t getting in.”

This is far more extreme of a condemnation of Trump than even I was willing to make. Milley, who was close to the center of the action and interacted with Trump on a daily basis, made Hitler comparisons that rival the shrillest resistance libs on Twitter. For years, liberals on Twitter were called hysterical whenever they expressed opinions like this, but now we find that behind closed doors, top generals were thinking the same thing. Milley viewed the MAGA movement as Nazi-esque, and was prepared to crush it with force. That view might not have been universal among the top brass, but the reporting in the book implies that it was very common.

In my 2016 post, I posed the question to liberals: “You and whose army?” Now we have an answer: Our own army. The United States Armed Forces.

And this is the moment, friends, when the military became known as “woke.” You remember Tucker Carlson calling General Milley a “pig” and “stupid?” That was in June of 2021. It’s now September of 2023 and General Milley still has his job and Tucker Carlson has been reduced to a caricature of himself doing tabloid schtup and tell pieces on what’s left of the Twitter platform.

So if you have any MAGA relatives, or have managed to maintain any MAGA friendships, against all odds, if they tell you about the impending Civil War that’s being touted as a real thing on right-wing media, tell them that so far as you know esprit de corps and ideological commitment to the Constitution trumps Trumpism. Let them barbwire the compound, hoist the Confederate flag over it, and send Jim Bakker money for apocalyptic food. If any of them are stupid enough to mount another riot, the military will shut them down and jimmy pronto. And they’ll go to prison, if they don’t go the way of Ashli Babbitt. Proud Boy Enrique Tarrio will be Elderly Boy when he gets out. It’s as simple as that.

  1. When people show you who they are…believe them! Maya Angelou
I have always called them nazis because that is what they are. Study Germany’s slide into fascism. For all the citizens who think they can be reasoned with…please remove your head from your own arse. There are 400,000 boys who are in the ground or perished in the air and at sea who think you are fools. There exist not only the present military, but a number of veterans, like myself, who would gladly pick up a gun to stop my children from experiencing their cruelty! A war? Just lift the age limits and I’d re-enlist and gladly serve under a commander like General Milley! If the American public would just get in touch with reality, and use the privilege others died to preserve for us, and VOTE EVERY REPUBLICAN OUT OF OFFICE AT EVERY ELECTION, we won’t need to go to war.

  2. Even the MAGAt with 20 firearms can only use two at a time, and only one with any accuracy.

I was in the Army for 6 years and each year scored expert with the M-16A-1 and hand grenade. I can shoot the nads off of a gnat at 50 yards.

I abhor hunting in all of it’s forms, but humans should know better and I have no qualms about laying a MFer out for good if threatened that way. They may start it, but they will get only one shot and they’d better not miss.

Personally, I’m pretty fed up with their tuff guy sniveling…….typical MAGAts, all mouth and no balls.

    • I was thinking along the same lines. Even with a gun in each hand they have to stop and reload. And spraying even auto fire (having illegally converted their guns) how many of these goobers hit their targets? I recall back in grunt school at Pendleton when they wanted my training company to do a live fire crossing of a half mile of open ground. An exercise in utlizing a ‘base of fire” as various others advanced a short distance. They had a TON of ammon and they wanted it used up so they wanted lots of full auto fire. I’ll leave out a particular indicdent during that in which I almost got killed, and focus on talking with a couple of our troop handlers/instructors later on about how stupid the whole thing was. I commented that it doesn’t matter how many rounds you put out, but rather how many of the enemy you actually hit that matters. If the position you’re advancing on hears a bunch of shooting but no one is getting dead from it it’s just noise. But if they see their comrades dropping from a well-aimed shot to the head, again and again THAT is what would cause them to break. Those two old-school Vietnam vets looked at each other and then at me and asked how the hell a college grad like me was there at Camp Pendleton instead of at Quantico either in OCS or going through the six month Basic School for new officers!

So yeah. I hit what I aim at. Always have and I maintained expert qual with the .45 (this was back in the 80s) too. LOTS of people who aren’t crazies have guns. Just one or two maybe but like me most of them can shoot them accurately. And the goobers with Rambo fantiasie will be in for a helluva surprise.

      • Fully automatic makes a lot of noise, and will certainly get your attention, but such a waste and then you have to re-load every three and a half brief trigger squeezes…..I have heard the new M-16s fire three rounds with each trigger squeeze……I wouldn’t like that with the muzzle rise of firing multiple rounds at once…..seems impractical, as you would have to totally re-site your target after each firing compared to a slight adjustment in re-aiming with a single shot.

In basic, my weapon was a Colt AR-15 modified to fully automatic……I never found another with the absolute accuracy of that weapon. It felt like you couldn’t help but hit what you were aiming at.

        • I started out with the M-16A1 but the switch to the A2 version (which had the “burst” fire option on the selector switch) started happening while I was at Pendleton. I agree with you it’s not much better than full auto. Once you know where a round will hit at various distances rapid, semi-auto fire can be deadly accurate. And if others around you are using it then a steady rate of accurate and deadly fire against the gomers can go on without pause for quite a while assuming everyone’s got a half=dozen mags loaded up. I never liked the M-16. Scew the weight, I’d have preferred they’d stuck with the M-14. Or better still the old M-1 Garand which could in the hands of even average troops be deadly at 800 yards and longer for those who were better than average shots. True, the sucker’s weighed over ten pounds but a switch to a composite instead of wood stock would have reduced that some. Of course that would have meant a bit more recoil but by the time it might have been done everyone was wearing the old school body armor – the flak jacket stuff. Anyway, if they come for me I’ll be going to hell in a crowd.

  3. It occurs to me, the lack of ANY school courses offered over the years were allowed to show ACTUAL imprisonment conditions, deaths and piles of dead bodies from the gas chambers, made to look like showers, but spewed poison gas that suffocated the victims … who were dragged out to be stacked like cordwood until they could be burned in the ovens, or because of the many bodies accumulating, they built huge firepits for open burning … the gas chambers were hosed out between loads of victims …

THIS was the final version of the Nazi empire, started by an individual that voiced his anger against anyone that would become targets of the Nazi war machine … the Jews were at the time cunning enough in business deals and were, unlike Trump, Real Deal wealthy, THAT HAD to change, as a target, the Jews were simply rounded up, sent to the concentration camps, where, if they lucky they lived for a while doing labor, but the conditions were so terrible, most went up in smoke as soon as they arrived on the trains, twins were a special delight for a certain doctor to do experiments on … He designed a machine to hold the twins together side-by-side, kill them both at the same instance, so they could use one twin for a control while they submitted the other to poisons and injury … dissection’s of both would reveal internal differences … nice guys those Nazi’s …

Nothing was ever in my normal schooling, but one of my junior high teachers was one of the soldiers of the US Army that came in, HE showed his personal photos to our class, thank god, someone who was there did that for me, the turds walking around now with their military style guns, saying how they stupidly support Trump, IS at once frightening, they have NO CLUE how Trump’s glib verbal style was trained on their feeble ability to see the truth beyond his mob-like stance …

If there ever was another attack on our Capitol, it would be the blood of the Proud Boys, NOT the peace keepers surrounding them … I remember seeing and touching the bullet holes in the Post Office Building in Ireland, where the English shot at and eventually executed freedom activists in their attempted fight for freedom many years ago … It raised the hairs on my arms and neck to think about the real courage it took to make this statement … This prick that is threatening the Judges, Prosecutors, and DOJ personnel, HAS to go to jail NOW …

  4. I’ve never considered the MAGA’s as brownshirts. I’ve always thought of them as orange shirts. Turns out that the orange shirt elites ARE getting orange shirts.

  5. I’ve never been a fan of Bill Maher. He’s always struck me as kind of smarmy and spends too much of his platform on both siderism. But on balance he’s probably fair most of the time. However, he was a guest on the Ari Member show (MSNBC) last night and one of his final points was that those of us on the left fail to really try to understand how MAGA’s feel and appreciate their point of view. As a matter of principle, I always try to give someone with an opposing view at least some consideration as to what points might be relevant or sometimes even move my thinking a bit in their direction. However, MAGAs, to me anyway appear to be living in some sort of manifest parallel universe where factual, verifiable information has no place. I honestly don’t know what there is to “understand” about their world view.

  6. There is some evil in the world you shouldn’t try to understand. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to become an exorcist or dabble in devil worship. I don’t care to understand the Nazis, Ted Bundy or BTK. I just want them neutralized to stop their sadism and evil. Let priests and detectives work with their evil. I know in our materialistic, supposedly ‘rational’ culture, the idea of ‘powers and principalities’, as St. Paul describes them, don’t exist. That’s arrogance and a defense mechanism at work. Have a near death experience, and then see if what you think you know for certain remains. Also anyone who is certain what happens to our consciousness after death is a liar. Even with all our technology, consciousness remains elusive to the scientists. As Shakespeare wrote long ago in Hamlet, there are more things in heaven and earth than dreamt of in our philosophies. Supernatural evil should be left alone…because, as Keanau Reeves said about it in Constantine, when you see them, they see you. The Maga crowd has no insights to offer. Review the seven deadly sins, i.e., greed, pride, wrath, envy, lust, sloth, gluttony, and you’ll find their driving force in there. Bill is in there too.

  7. While I could never be considered an expert shot, I bet I can shoot better than 95% of the MAGA cult! They best not miss with their first shot at me, cause they won’t get a second chance!

  8. After 12 years in GA,8 in very redneck Western MA ( the college towns are liberal, the others, are right-wing Trumpies), the loonies have a lot of guns. Some actually hunt for food. The majority hunt to drink and get away from their wives so they can behave like fat, obnoxious frat rats. The good news is most of them can’t hit the broad side of a barn, let alone carry a deer a mile to their car. They are overweight. They are stupid. They drink too.much, hare women, are racists.
The ones I worry about are the exp military types who do try to.keep.fit and who can actually shoot well. They might train the Darth Doofuses. And it only takes one to.become a sniper. Fitness doesn’t matter so.much for that; you just have to shoot well.
