Why on earth would Donald Trump interrupt a phone call in which his administration was advocating that Richard Grenell takeover as director of the Kennedy Center, all such that by the end of Donald Trump’s four minute call he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees that oversees the Center? That is a great question and we need to look at it below. But first do note the symbolism and just gooey greatness in that Grenell is one of the very few openly gay men in Trump’s inner orbit and guess what job the gay man gets? Yes! Director of the Kennedy Center, control of its season of shows! Fabulous! But it was how Donald Trump became Chairman that held most people’s attention because it wasn’t supposed to work this way. Oh, and keep your woke sh*t at home, this is the new and improved Kennedy Center Trump National.

According to Donald Trump, the vote to install him as Chair was unanimous, but according to reality, it was not. As Jake Tapper said:

“Well, the votes to make Donald Trump the chairman of the Kennedy Senator Kennedy Center was not unanimous as he said it was. There were some votes that were abstentions. There were some votes against. President Trump called in in the middle of the call.. to fire her and then to replace her with Ric Grenell. And the president called in the midst of the voting on that and spoke for about four minutes.”

Okay, that makes absolutely no sense, Jake, but we’ll take it for now. The important point is that somehow Trump managed to get himself voted in as chairman and that it wasn’t unanimous as he claimed. This gave Trump the power necessary to fire several other Board members, all in order to straighten (Literally) out the shows that occur, get them to mainstream themselves a bit in one of the world’s most respected cultural arts centers. Evidently they didn’t even know they were doing a bad job.

Now, as noted above, you may be tempted to think that Donald Trump wants to control the type of shows that take place each season such that they’re a break from the past. Except, Trump wouldn’t know how to set a new course as to programs because he never saw any of the old ones!

The single best explanation as to why Trump would even have an interest in the job (I doubt that he’ll actually go to meetings or anything) goes to George Conway, who explained on Bluesky: “Why did Trump have himself put in charge of the Kennedy Center? Because he knows that the educated and cultured people who patronize it despise him. So he seeks revenge. And he knows that his being in charge of the center will destroy it.”

I think that is exactly right. For decades, Trump sought to get inside New York high society which always punted him and his “gold toilet” lifestyle. He never forgave them and his tour de force as the people’s populist president is partly a result. It is also true that Donald Trump’s way of getting even isn’t to adapt and become acceptable to the groups he wants to patronize, it is to destroy that which brought the group together. Trump’s only road through rejection goes directly through destruction. Next up? Kennedy Center – and wait until you see the new season!

That is certainly close enough. It is not like Trump’s cultural reference points extend beyond renditions of “Memory” from “Cats.” All Donald Trump knows is that he will not stand for anything “woke” in the… arts. Good f*cking luck with that one. Try producing a decent show without LGBTQ input and, well – you’ll have Nickelodeon or something

The arts, especially theatre arts, will stop if one shoves people back into the closet, which is all anything “woke” ever was – accepting people for who they are, meeting them where they choose to be. Nothing more.

So there you have it. Donald Trump will now be in charge of running the fall and winter season at the Kennedy Center, sure to make it a much better place, more like Branson Missouri than an association with the elan of Washington’s cultural gravity well that is the Center. Some more offerings from “X”:

And so, no – he wasn’t unanimously voted in as Chair, but – yes, the woke shit is gone. Try producing shows while completely asleep to the LGBTQ reality in red America.

God Bless: I can be reached at [email protected] and on Twitter or “X” at the @JasonMiciak and now on Bluesky – as you should be, too.

  1. I.grew up with musical theater and ballet. Allowing the Toddler in Chief to.run it is like having the Pope manage a burlesque troop. I doubt he’s ever seen a Broadway show in his entire life. This is just his way of flipping off the sophisticated crowd that has season tickets. The only type of show he’d enjoy would have pole dancers, preferably underage ones.
