Maybe Kevin McCarthy is breathing a sigh of relief right now, that Donald Trump won’t primary him. Since Trump was “livid” at McCarthy and threatening to primary everybody else, we can reasonably infer that. In all events, McCarthy and Trump have supposedly kissed and made up and Trump’s still running the GOP from what we can tell. The Hill:

Trump has stewed over McCarthy’s comments and actions in the weeks since [the Capitol riot], and he is plotting with advisers about potentially backing primary challenges to disloyal Republicans.

The readout boasted that Trump’s popularity has “never been stronger than it is today” and that his endorsement is perhaps the most valuable ever.

Polling since Trump left office has shown the ex-president is regaining some popularity with Republicans since the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, when an angry pro-Trump mob beat police officers in a disturbing scene that forced the evacuation of lawmakers and led to Trump’s impeachment by the House.

Yet Trump has not reached even a 50 percent approval rating in Gallup’s polling.

Trump might be a pariah with a lot of people but with Republicans he’s a paragon. The RNC invited him to speak at a donor meeting in the spring. Politico:

The RNC is also expected to invite other potential 2024 candidates and Republican leaders to the retreat, which is to be held in Palm Beach, Fla., April 9-11. […]

With Trump considering a 2024 comeback, the committee has been careful to demonstrate neutrality, since the former president is no longer an incumbent. It invited Trump and other would-be presidential candidates to its annual winter meeting earlier this month. Trump did not end up making an in-person appearance at the event, which occurred the same week as the Capitol riot.

It has not been decided where in Palm Beach the April donor retreat will take place. But people familiar with the planning say it will not be at Mar-a-Lago.

Florida is the capitol of Wingnuttia, no question. And it looks like Trump is still the reigning monarch.

  1. Given that Trmp is going to have to either find a new home in the next two weeks, or shut down his club, it might be hard to schedule *anything* at Mar-al-Ego.

  2. It just blows me away, how these republicans keep lining up behind trump. They still haven’t figured out, they will go down with him. I think the Lincoln Project guys and other conservatives that actually have morals and ethics need to start another party. I think the sane conservative voters would flock to their side. But maybe, after Joe, Kamala, Nancy and Chuck get things going in the right direction.

    • It seems the Republican brand might be too toxic for the sane ones to save it, or why deal with wackos. They will just start fresh and clean. And the real nutjobs will go the Patriot Party anyways. Gee, sounds very Russian.
