This is something you could do a side by side comparison on, unfortunately. Pull up a clip of the Nazi rallies from the 30’s and compare the sight and sound with Donald Trump’s Nazi MAGA rally in Juneau, Wisconsin today. The magical incantation was how he was going to “get” The Other, in this case, migrants. In other eras it has been the Jews, the Blacks, the Native Americans, somebody is the savage, heathen, ungodly, evil “other” that is responsible for all ills of the culture in question. And it never is that way. But there’s something in human nature that makes a certain kind of primitive, fearful personality decide upon a colletive enemy and then demonize that choice. This is what it looks like in America in 2024.

The vitriol, the loathing, is fundamentally un-American. Yes, we are a melting pot and yes, some race or ethnicity has taken turns being “The Other.” Sad and shameful, but true. And now, ironically, people whose own grandparents or great-grandparents, or great-great- grandparents were once The Other, are only too happy to stand and cheer at the prospect of Donald Trump rounding up people and incarcerating them, with the ultimate goal of mass deportation.

And you see the mechanism here, plain as day. The “migrants” have taken something from these people. They’ve taken jobs or killed their cats and dogs, or taken “their culture” which is a phrase Trump has used from the podium. “Or your culture will be gone.” White culture will be gone. You’ll be surrounded by Them — and we don’t mean the giant ants from the movie of that name, we mean human beings with a different level of melatonin and an accent, and that qualifies them for extermination.

Trump turning on his own and that makes perfect sense. Ask Donald, Jr. about the time in college when his father showed up at the door and didn’t like the way Junior was dressed, and hauled off and belted him, knocking him to the ground. Intriguingly, the MAGAs never think that Trump might turn on them as well.

Yeah, Putin is his buddy and people who don’t vote for Donald are his enemies and hey, guess what, you might end up in the concentration camps with the migrants. Don’t think it hasn’t crossed Donald’s mind.

Ooops. Right on cue. And again, politics in this country never used to be this way. You may recall one of John McCain’s better moments, when a woman at a town hall called Barack Obama an “Arab” and said, “I don’t trust him.” McCain replied, “No ma’am, he’s a good man. He and I just happen to disagree about some things.” Where is that civility, that basic decency that a GOP candidate used to be able to display? It is gone, a relic of a bygone age. This is the best the GOP can come up with, this addlepated clown with the hairplugs, girdle, heel lifts and the nastiest, most immature disposition to ever besmirch American politics. (And let’s not forget his fourth grade level vocabulary, all 200 words of it.)

This is Sieg Heil! time. That’s the energy. And at least we know. Back in 2016, we didn’t know. We could have known that these people were out there. Right Wing Watch, among others, had been posting clips of this kind of behavior and these kinds of people for some time. But we weren’t paying attention. And so out of the blue, this fascist clown, this “populist” fraud, came onto the American political scene and walked away with the presidency in 2016. And seeks to do it again.

And here’s Trump’s most dreaded (and most often denied) result when speaking: people get up and leave. Just take your eyes off Trump and watch the movement in the shadows.

Maybe they’re just going to the concession stand for more popcorn? Ya spose?

  5. It’s in the family. We already knew that his grandparents, Friedrich and Elisabeth (nee Christ) were from Kallstadt but there were still relatives in Germany. This is where it gets interesting:

    Unteroffizier Ernst Christ, of the Christ branch of the family, a first cousin once removed of Donald Trump, the son of his great-uncle Johannes Christ, served in the 1st Company of the Panzerjager-Abteilung 670, an anti-tank unit that saw action on the western front in Belgium and France before being transferred to participate in the invasion of Russia. In July 1942, Christ’s company occupied the town of Polodovitoye, about 100 kilometers south of Stalingrad. The Nazi soldiers rounded up about 100 Jewish families who had fled there from throughout the region. According to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust research center in Jerusalem, “Jews were loaded onto trucks, supposedly to be taken home. In fact, the victims were taken outside the village toward a ravine located 50 meters south of the village. There the victims were shot or probably severely wounded and then doused with some highly flammable liquid and then set on fire.”

    Gefreiter Eduard Freund, born in Kallstadt, another first cousin once removed of Donald Trump, the son of Donald’s great aunt Elisabetha Trump and Karl Phillip Freund. served in a security unit, the fourth company of the Sicherungs-Battalion 790, whose task of guarding supply lines and police work quickly turned, like that of all such units, into the operation of wholesale brutal terror.
