What a fool believes, he sees. Right now Donald Trump is meeting with Ursula van der Leyen, the President of the European Commission. She is there to hopefully talk Trump out of his misguided and punitive tariffs proposal — punitive for us, that is. Trump is there to growl and paw the ground and project what he believes is some image of power. He sounds like a raving lunatic. He is an embarrassment. To quote the Scottish poet Robert Burns, upon whose turf he sits, “Oh would someone the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others see us.” Burns also made a comment about mice and men and the futility of their best laid plans. And he’d never met Trump. Would that we could all say the same.

Dead. Did you know we were dead for a ducat, dead? No? Neither did I. What a moron. And yes, he started talking about the goddamn windmills again. Sigh. Did you place a bet on that or have a drinking game going? I’m willing to bet that these European leaders take meds ahead of meeting with him so that they don’t burst out laughing. Or, maybe they’re too consumed with horror to laugh. It’s one or the other. New York Times:

President Trump revisited a sore subject in his remarks: windmills in Scotland. The president has been opposed to wind energy since long before he ran for office, because he said it upset members at his golf club.

In 2012, he testified before the Scottish Parliament, saying: “Recently, a very unattractive wind turbine was put up right on the course at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club. The club did not know about it and the members are going absolutely crazy.”

President Trump was asked about starvation in Gaza. He says the U.S. has contributed tens of millions to help starving children in Gaza, but suggests the aid is being stolen and he hasn’t received a thank you. “People are stealing the food, they’re stealing the money, they’re stealing the money for the food, they’re stealing weapons, they’re stealing everything. It’s a mess. That whole place is a mess.”

Are they eating the cats and eating the dogs? I’m too afraid to ask.

President Trump again puts the odds of making a deal at 50/50, saying that there are still three to four sticking points between the United States and the European Union as they negotiate on trade, but he declined to offer details.

It’s notable that he’s repeating his 50/50 remarks as he heads into what is expected to be a relatively brief meeting. Trump himself just said that it might only be about an hour.

He’s just winging it. This is becoming more and more apparent as the days go on. Trump drags himself reluctantly into these photo ops (as he conceives them to be) and he does his usual disgraceful insults of his predecessor. Then whomever is hosting him or visting him, either way, flatters him. Von der Leyen began her remarks, “You’re known as a tough dealmaker and negotiator.” She hasn’t started talking about what a world class golfer he is (in his own mind) but that may come, too.

Everybody treats this man like the unstable idiot child that he is. They flatter him so that he doesn’t throw a tantrum or make things any more uncomfortable than they already are. They endure him.

At least they don’t have to live in the same company he *governs.* That is their blessing.
