When you’re in the middle of doing something, especially when the rest of the world doesn’t see what you’re doing isn’t going very well, you tend to get a case of tunnel vision, you only see what you’re working on. And as a result, you tend to lose track of what the rest of the world is seeing. And that’s what’s killing the GOP right now.
A brief aside to set up my point, and I promise, it all ties together. When I was 16 in Chicago, I had a job with Andy Frain. They were a company that basically provided uniformed ushers and even guards for events such as concerts and dog shows. They also supplied security checkpoint personnel to airlines at O’Hare field, and that’s where I gravitated.
That was from 1975-1978. And anybody who was alive at that time knows that US airports were overrun with the Hare Krishnas. They were cult followers of a far east religion. And they were obnoxious. They dressed in white t-shirts and orange robes with shaved heads with a ponytail at the back. They stayed in the public area, pestering vulnerable travelers into buying their hardcover copies of their “bible”.
That’s the problem, they were too obvious. Later they changed to slacks, a dress shirt, a sport jacket, and a wig, but it didn’t do any good. My fondest memory of those days was watching a Krishna pull a $20 out of a Marine’s wallet, only for the Marine to pull the wig off of the Krishna’s head, run into the bathroom and flush it down the toilet.
And that’s where the GOP comes in today. They can sit there in the sane side and try to talk issues but on the Trump side, they’re all dancing around in orange robes, with shaved heads and ponytails, and singing Hare Trumpna, Hare Trumpna, Krishna Trumpna, Hare Trumpna. They don’t care if they’re obvious, in fact they revel in being what they are.
And that’s the problem for the GOP writ large. They can try to put a pair of slacks, a dress shirt, a sport jacket, and a wig on these morons, but you just can’t put lipstick on that pig! And that is the curse for the GOP, they are now all the Hare Trumpna party. And they can’t hide that.
