The GOP Is Doing The Democrats’ Work For Them

Just a quick trip down memory lane. Trump loses the 2020 election by more than 7 million votes. Trump immediately whines that he won, and was the victim of massive voter fraud. Trump goes 0-65 in state and federal courts trying to overturn state election results. Getting the memo, GOP state legislatures pass sweeping new voter suppression laws labeled as voter integrity laws to try to remain competitive.

At this point, the less cranially defective GOP leaders like McCarthy and McConnell started doing everything but pour Sakrete into Trump’s mouth to get him to quit bitching about the 2020 results.

After all, they’d already been burned twice. Trump and the GOP looked like morons going 0-65 in state and federal courts, with even Trump appointed judges throwing his cases out. And second, both Georgia Senate seats went to special elections. Trump went to Georgia to GOTV by telling people at rallies that they may as well not bother, since it was all already rigged. The Democrats won both seats.

Remember, 2022 was supposed to be a walkover year for the GOP, all they had to do was to stick to a simple game plan. Knock Biden and the Democrats for high gas prices, inflation, but instead, it’s looking more and more like they are going to Trump themselves right out of this.

Here’s why. To prove his party dominance, Trump is running around hand picking GOP candidates for almost every spot on the ticket, and it’s killing them. In PA today, a group of 9 current and former moderate GOP officeholders came out and endorsed Democrat gubernatorial candidate Josh Shapiro since their own candidate Doug Mastriani was so extreme and toxic. Shapiro leads by 4 points in a recent poll. And in GA, Raphael warnock is running 10 points ahead of Herschel Walker, who is barely campaigning, and can hardly string two coherent sentences together.

But when it comes to Trump, of course things can always get worse. When it comes to US House races, especially when there’s a GOP incumbent, Trump’s hand picked acolytes are pretty much getting their asses handed to them. I’m guessing there are some GOP incumbents who are starting to wish that hadn’t announced their retirement this year. And the same thing for some Democrats.

But because they’re Trombies, they can only have one possible response to losing. They’re screaming to the heavens that The GOP itself rigged the primaries with massive voter fraud to keep them off of the ballot! No shit. I wrote about the woman in GA who lost to both Kemp and Perdue, Kemp by more than 50 points. She wanted every person who voted for her to send a signed affidavit to her campaign headquarters to prove the election was rigged.

This is the GOP’s worst nightmare scenario, simply because The biter got bit. If GOP candidates are going to scream that the GOP engaged in massive voter fraud against them, it no longer allows them to play the victim, and makes it harder to blame the Democrats for massive voter fraud in 2020. And it also lays to waste the effectiveness of their brand spanking new voter integrity laws.

But Jason Johnson summed it up perfectly on MSNBC today when he said, Look, if my personal trainer tells me that it really doesn’t matter how often I go to the gym, I’m still going to be fat, guess what? I ain’t going to the gym anymore! Those crunches are a pain in the ass, so why bother? Trump has spent the last 20 months screaming about massive voter fraud ripping him off. And you can bet your ass that he’ll back up any of his loser candidates who scream voter fraud, simply  because it plays into his narrative. What do you think the chances are that the supporters of those Trombie loser candidates swallow their pride and show up in November to support the more moderate GOP candidate. Especially if they’re thinking We wuz robbed!

We already know that Trump’s voter fraud rhetoric was effective in Georgia. Post Senate special election analysis showed that turnout for the Senate races was 15-25% lower in GOP strongholds than for the general election. People stayed home. And now Trump and his larval Trombies are doing the same thing in the primaries, in districts, where the margins of victory are normally so much smaller to begin with.

Going into November, the Democrats can run on abortion rights, gun control, LGBTQ rights, voting rights, and police reform. And what is the GOP running on? Who cares, when the loudest voices in the room are bellowing Massive voter fraud committed by the GOP on their own candidates!? And who it hurts the most is the moderate GOP incumbents who survived the Trump challenger. After all, how does he make up for that lost portion of the GOP base? The Democrats are motivated, they’ll get no help there. Don’t touch that dial.
